Tonight Mostly clear, with a temperature rising to around 8 by 5am. Wind chill values as low as -6. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 7 mph in the evening.

Tuesday Mostly sunny, with a high near 29. Wind chill values as low as -1. West southwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the afternoon.

Tuesday Night Mostly cloudy, with a low around 3. Calm wind.

 

EXTREME COLD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM CST /11 AM
EST/ TUESDAY
WHAT...Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 10 to 19 below zero
  are expected.

* WHERE...Portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western
  Kentucky, and southeast Missouri.

* WHEN...Until 10 AM CST /11 AM EST/ Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...The cold wind chills as low as 19 below zero could
  result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Frostbite and
  hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these
  temperatures.

Good afternoon Metropolis, Massac County and beyond! Needless to say Winter Storm Fern has been a doozy! We consider ourselves very fortunate that we did not reach the potential maximum in snow totals.

 

For safety’s sake, it’s advised for folks to remain off the road if at all possible today as crews continue to work and clear the aftermath of the storm.
If you must get out:
Please use main roads as much as possible,
Due to the temperatures please advise someone that you are traveling – advise them of your route – advise them of your expected arrival time. Be sure to give this duty to someone who will follow up expeditedly if you have not contacted them by your estimated time.
We suggest as of now that you continue trickling your water through the week.
We are keeping up with closures and cancellations as best we can.  You may send closure information to 618-524-9209 via text.

Deadline Extended: Get Covered Illinois Open Enrollment Now Runs Through January 31

METROPOLIS, IL – Residents seeking health insurance coverage have been granted additional time to secure a plan for the 2026 calendar year. Officials have announced that the Get Covered Illinois open enrollment period has been officially extended until January 31, 2026.

This extension provides a vital window for individuals and families who have not yet selected a provider or who need to update their existing coverage.

For those navigating the enrollment process, local help is available. Rural Health, Inc. (RHI) is offering personalized assistance to the community. Individuals can contact a member of the RHI team at 618-833-4471 to receive help with the enrollment process.

Key details regarding the assistance include:

No Cost: Enrollment help is provided at no charge.

Open to All: Assistance is available to everyone in the community, regardless of whether they are a current patient of Rural Health, Inc.

Residents can explore plan options and complete their applications through the following methods:

Metropolis Celebrates Yolina Lindquist's Homecoming Event

Metropolis, Illinois – On February 15th, the community of Metropolis will roll out the red carpet for one of its own as Yolina Lindquist returns home after being crowned Miss Cosmo International. The highly anticipated homecoming event will take place at The Space, located at 715 Market Street, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.

Residents and local businesses are encouraged to come together in support of Yolina, who has soared to international fame through her dedication, grace, and the strong values rooted in her small-town upbringing.
