Talking Prompts for Your Thanksgiving Gathering

Bridge Generations and Create Incredible Memories

WMOK – (Metropolis, IL) – Thanksgiving is a time to nourish bonds and express gratitude. While there are many topics that could make their way to the Thanksgiving table we want to remind you that this is a time to reconnect and truly enjoy each other’s company.

Focus on the shared history and love that holds your family together, creating a peaceful, memorable day.

Below you’ll find a list of questions that will encourage learning about family history as well as create wonderful generation bridging conversations:

(Note:  We highly suggest setting up a smartphone or other recording device on a tripod to capture video of the conversation for future generations.  At the very least, we hope that you will add a Voice Recorder app to your phone and make a recording.)

What was your favorite subject in school, and why?

What’s a game or activity you enjoyed doing as a child that no one does anymore?

What was the first job you ever had?

Can you tell me about the house you grew up in?

What was your favorite holiday tradition when you were young?

What’s the most significant world event you remember experiencing as a child or young adult?

Who was your best friend growing up, and what made them special?

How did you meet your spouse/partner?

What’s one thing you wish you had learned earlier in life?

What was dating like when you were young?

What was the biggest fashion trend when you were a teenager?

What was your favorite music or band when you were my age?

What’s a story about a grandparent (your parent) that you haven’t told us?

How did you get your first car?

What’s the hardest decision you remember making in your twenties?

What was your town like when you were a kid?

What’s a skill or hobby you picked up when you were young?

What was your most memorable birthday?

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

What was a piece of technology that changed your life?

A great tip for your holiday conversations:

Practice “Active listening”.  Active listening is a communication technique that involves fully concentrating, understanding, responding, and remembering what the speaker is saying.

It goes beyond simply hearing words; it requires engaging with the speaker both verbally and non-verbally to show that you are attentive and interested.

This can include nodding, making eye contact, and summarizing or reflecting on what the speaker has shared to ensure clarity and comprehension.

Active listening not only helps foster a deeper connection between individuals but also encourages more meaningful conversations, as both parties feel heard and valued.

By practicing active listening, we cultivate empathy and understanding, which are essential for effective communication.
