Metropolis' Own "Rifleman": The Enduring Legacy of Pool Legend Buddy Hall

WMOK (Metropolis, IL) – Metropolis, Illinois, widely known as the home of Superman, also boasts a less fictional, but equally legendary, native son: Cecil P. “Buddy” Hall. Born in 1945, Hall, affectionately dubbed “The Rifleman” for his uncanny accuracy and straight shooting, etched his name into the annals of professional pool as one of the most dynamic and dominant players of his generation. His passing on May 22, 2025, at the age of 79, marks the end of an era.  WMOK first learned the new of Hall’s passing from Billiard Congress of America established in 1948.

Hall’s journey began humbly, playing pool as a teenager in Metropolis. He honed his skills by watching the greats and practicing relentlessly, developing a signature aggressive, fast-paced style that revolutionized the game.

Throughout a career spanning decades, “The Rifleman” amassed over 100 professional tournament victories. His impressive list of accolades includes winning the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship in both 1991 and 1998, and numerous other prestigious titles like the Caesar’s Tahoe 9-Ball Championship and the International 9-Ball Classic. Many consider him one of the most fundamentally sound 9-ball players of all time, with unparalleled cue ball control.

He even developed the “clock system,” a technique for aiming the cue ball that is still studied by aspiring players today.

Buddy Hall’s impact extended beyond his incredible skill. He was a captivating showman, whose rivalries and victories electrified audiences. He was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in 2000, solidifying his place among the sport’s all-time greats. Player of the Year honors in 1982, 1991, and 1998 further attest to his consistent excellence.

Even in semi-retirement, Hall remained a beloved figure, occasionally competing in regional and senior events, and continuing to share his vast knowledge as a teacher and ambassador of the game. His biography, “Rags to Rifleman,” published in 1995, offers a glimpse into the life and career of this remarkable athlete.

Buddy Hall’s legacy as a true innovator and champion will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations of pool players to come.
