WMOK Coffee Break – Metropolis Mayor Gregg Jeffords 5.22.25 – Part One – Getting Settled – First Focus Abatements

WMOK (Metropolis, IL) – When newly elected Metropolis Mayor Gregg Jeffords joined WMOK for his maiden voyage on Coffee Break this week, we had a great discussion about his decision to run for mayor and his vision for our city.

Jeffords’ initial decision to contemplate running for mayor came when his daughter advised that she didn’t know if she wanted to return to her hometown following her college studies, as she didn’t feel that the opportunities here could facilitate her goals.

In today’s portion of WMOK’s Coffee Break with Mayor Jeffords we discussed the act of “getting settled” into the new position and the top priority items going forward.

Memorial Day Weekend

– Friday, May 23, 2025

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL  — The Metropolis Public Library is excited to invite crafty people to its community initiative, the Nifty Needles Group.  This weekly gathering invites residents aged 11 and up to explore their creativity through knitting, sewing, embroidery, and other personal crafting projects.

Participants will convene in the library’s basement every Friday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM to work on their individual projects. This group aims to provide a welcoming space for crafters to focus on their hobbies while enjoying a friendly atmosphere.

“Crafting is a wonderful way to express creativity and connect with others,” said the library’s program coordinator, Colby Kennedy. “We want to create an inclusive environment where individuals can share their skills, learn from one another, and enjoy refreshments provided by the library.”

The Nifty Needles Group is perfect for both beginners learning a new skill and experienced crafters wanting to refine their techniques or tackle larger projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies and ideas to share.

In addition to hands-on crafting, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversation with fellow enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community around shared interests.

The Metropolis Public Library is committed to serving the needs of its diverse population, and this new group is just one of many initiatives aimed at bringing people together through their common interests.

Memorial Day on Monday

Today, we begin Memorial Day Weekend. While this is often considered a time of cookouts and pool openings, we feel it is important to remind ourselves of the primary purpose of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is to honor and mourn U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Origins: The holiday originated in the years following the Civil War (1861-1865), which saw an immense loss of life. Various communities, both North and South, began holding “Decoration Day” tributes, decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers.

As a federal holiday, Memorial Day comes with certain expectations. Many businesses, schools, and government offices close in observance of the day, allowing individuals the time to reflect and participate in commemorative events. Activities such as parades, memorial services, and moments of silence are common as communities come together to honor those who sacrificed their lives for their country. It is also a reminder for everyone to take a moment to appreciate the freedoms we enjoy and the brave individuals who fought to protect them.

American Legion Post 306 in Metropolis will be honoring veterans by placing flags on their graves on Saturday, May 24, in remembrance of Memorial Day. Volunteers are requested to gather first at the legion hall located at 321 Market St.

The American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary will serve a free breakfast at 7 a.m. for volunteers placing flags on about 1,400 graves at Metropolis Memorial Gardens, IOOF Cemetery, and Masonic Cemetery. Breakfast will include eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, juice, and coffee. The flag placement takes about three hours.

Volunteers will leave from the hall at 8 a.m. for the project. Please bring a screwdriver to help with placing flags.

Families with private cemeteries can pick up flags for their veterans at the hall.

If it rains, the event will be canceled. For more information, call the American Legion at 618-524-2043.

Metropolis American Legion Post 306 will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 26, at Memorial Park located on Metropolis Street, next to the public library. The special guest speaker will be State Rep. Patrick Windhorst.rick Windhorst.

2025 Metropolis Superman Celebration in Sight – Monumental Amounts of Fun – Hometown Superhero Volunteers and “Metropolis Ambassadors” Requested

WMOK (Metropolis, IL) – WMOK spoke with Lisa Davis of the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s monthly board meeting.  She advised that as the dust starts to settle on the official plans and schematics of the 2025 Superman Celebration they do remain in need of volunteers and local folks to serve in a ‘community ambassador’ type of role.

Davis explained that the volunteers could expect such tasks as manning booths and displays, setting up and taking down the infrastructure of the celebration and working in a ‘floating mode’ assisting with needed tasks during the celebration.  Volunteers can expect to operate as an ambassador of Metropolis of sorts as they will likely encounter multitudes of visitors who may have local questions.

Davis also told WMOK that local businesses are welcome to create a challenge among their employees to get out into the community and help bring the 2025 Superman Celebration to life.

Please contact Lisa Davis at 618-638-2444 by text or phone call to discuss possibilities.
