Hummus, also spelled hommus or houmous, is a creamy and savory dip or spread originating from the Levant region in the Middle East. Its full name in Arabic is “hummus bi tahini,” which translates to “chickpeas with tahini.”

The main ingredients in traditional hummus are:

Chickpeas: Cooked and mashed, they form the base of the dip.

Tahini: A paste made from ground sesame seeds, providing a rich and nutty flavor.

Lemon Juice: Adds brightness and acidity.

Garlic: Contributes a pungent and savory note.

Olive Oil: Often blended in for smoothness and drizzled on top for flavor and presentation.

Salt: To enhance the overall taste.

Some variations may also include spices like cumin, paprika, or other seasonings. The texture can range from smooth and creamy to slightly more rustic, depending on preparation methods.

Hummus is a versatile food, typically served at room temperature or cold as a dip with pita bread, vegetables (like carrots, celery, and cucumbers), or crackers. It can also be used as a spread in sandwiches and wraps or as a side dish with falafel, grilled meats, or salads.

Nutritionally, hummus is considered a healthy food. It’s a good source of:

Dietary Fiber: Aids in digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Plant-based Protein: Contributes to satiety and muscle health.

Healthy Fats: Primarily from olive oil and tahini, which are mostly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.

Vitamins and Minerals: Including iron, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, and B vitamins.

Because of its nutritional profile and versatility, hummus has gained popularity worldwide as a healthy and delicious snack and accompaniment to various meals.
