Join the Fight Against Hunger: Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Metropolis on Saturday May 10th

WMOK (Metropolis, IL) Get ready, Metropolis! It’s almost time for the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, facilitated by the US Postal Service. This year, mark your calendars for Saturday, May 10th, and join your neighbors in fighting hunger.

Making a difference couldn’t be easier. Simply leave non-perishable food items in a bag or sack by your mailbox on Saturday, and your mail carrier will collect it. Every can and box will help families in need.

For those heading to the Metropolis and Massac County Farmers Market, you’ll have another convenient way to contribute. Donations will be gratefully accepted at the market, which takes place every Saturday morning from 8 am until noon at Dorothy Miller Park on East Front Street. Let’s come together, Metropolis, and make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger the most successful yet!

Metropolis City Clean Up Week Upcoming –

Metropolis City Clean Up Week Upcoming -

WMOK – Metropolis, IL – As spring blossoms in Metropolis, the city is excited to announce its much-anticipated Spring Clean Up Week, scheduled from May 12th to May 16th. This annual event encourages residents to participate in a collective effort to keep our community clean and beautiful.

During Clean Up Week, residents are invited to declutter their homes and neighborhoods by placing unwanted items curbside for disposal. However, it’s important to note that this service will be available for this week only. To ensure a smooth collection process, all items must be placed at your regular pick-up point and positioned within five feet of the trash container.

City officials emphasize that cleanliness is key, and therefore, all items placed for collection must be either bagged or contained. Additionally, any loose items need to be bundled for easy handling by workers. To facilitate timely collection, residents should have their trash ready for pick-up on their designated day, with all items out by 6 a.m.

While this is a fantastic opportunity to dispose of unwanted items, residents should be aware of some restrictions. The following items will not be accepted: tires, batteries, hazardous or medical waste, car parts, satellites, yard waste, construction and demolition debris, flammable liquids, paint (unless it’s empty or dry), electronics, and appliances. This ensures that we maintain a safe and environmentally-friendly disposal process.

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL  — The Metropolis Public Library is excited to invite crafty people to its community initiative, the Nifty Needles Group.  This weekly gathering invites residents aged 11 and up to explore their creativity through knitting, sewing, embroidery, and other personal crafting projects.

Participants will convene in the library’s basement every Friday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM to work on their individual projects. This group aims to provide a welcoming space for crafters to focus on their hobbies while enjoying a friendly atmosphere.

“Crafting is a wonderful way to express creativity and connect with others,” said the library’s program coordinator, Colby Kennedy. “We want to create an inclusive environment where individuals can share their skills, learn from one another, and enjoy refreshments provided by the library.”

The Nifty Needles Group is perfect for both beginners learning a new skill and experienced crafters wanting to refine their techniques or tackle larger projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies and ideas to share.

In addition to hands-on crafting, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversation with fellow enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community around shared interests.

The Metropolis Public Library is committed to serving the needs of its diverse population, and this new group is just one of many initiatives aimed at bringing people together through their common interests.
