
In a shocking incident, police responded to a residence in the 1800 block of Ferry on the evening of April 21, where a male victim was attacked in his own home. According to reports, the victim was asleep in the living room when he was struck three times in the head with a baseball bat.
Authorities revealed that the assailant also attempted to shoot the victim, discharging a firearm twice but missing both times. The victim identified his attacker as 65-year-old James H. Smith, a resident of Metropolis.
As soon as the police arrived on the scene, they began gathering information and set up surveillance on Hummas Apartments, where Smith resided. Shortly after, officers witnessed him leaving the complex and took him into custody without incident.
A search warrant was subsequently executed at Smith’s residence, leading to the recovery of the baseball bat used in the assault, as well as ammunition that matched the casings found at the scene of the crime.
Smith has been charged with Home Invasion, Aggravated Battery, and Aggravated Assault. He is currently being held at the Massac County Detention Center as the investigation continues.
