Hoppin' John on New Year's Day is thought to bring prosperity and good fortune
(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, many people around the world partake in traditional meals believed to bring good luck for the year ahead.
One such meal is the Southern United States’ classic New Year’s Day dish: Hoppin’ John.
This hearty meal consists of black-eyed peas, rice, and smoked pork, often accompanied by collard greens and cornbread. Each component holds symbolic meaning – the peas represent coins, the greens symbolize paper money, and the cornbread signifies gold.
Eating Hoppin’ John on New Year’s Day is thought to bring prosperity and good fortune in the coming year. The meal’s origins can be traced back to African, Caribbean, and Southern culinary traditions, making it a culturally rich and deeply symbolic dish.
Whether enjoyed for its delicious flavors or its perceived power to attract luck, Hoppin’ John continues to be a cherished New Year’s tradition for many, reminding us of the significance of food and ritual in our lives.

Revelers began celebrating New Year’s Eve in Times Square as early as 1904, but it was in 1907 that the New Year’s Eve Ball made its maiden descent from the flagpole atop One Times Square. Seven versions of the Ball have been designed to signal the New Year.
