From the dawn of time, everyone from philosophers to the the man or woman on the street has scratched their confused heads over this mind-boggling question — how can you hold and eat ice cream in your hands without making a mess? This September 22, celebrate the long-awaited answer — National Ice Cream Cone Day — by taking a bite into America’s favorite way to eat a cool, sweet treat!

Before the invention of the ice cream cone, there was no good solution to the hassle (not to mention the mess) of eating an ice cream without dripping the stuff down your arms or down your chin and ruining your clothes. But thanks to this so-simple-it’s-incredible-nobody-thought-of-it-earlier innovation, now we’re free to indulge ice cream cones in waffle-style, pretzel, chocolate-coated, wafer, sugar and more. So, feel free to enjoy these waning hot days by getting your favorite cone (ours is sugar!) and celebrate National Ice Cream Cone Day.

Massac County Unit #1 Homecoming Weekend

(WMOK) Massac County, IL – This has been a week full of fun and creativity for Massac Unit 1 students as they’ve dressed in costumes to celebrate Homecoming week.

Monday was country versus country club day

Tuesday was soccer moms and barbecue dads day

Wednesday was rock star and character day

Thursday costumes were divided by grade – freshman nerds, sleepy sophomores, jock juniors and senior citizens.

Massac Unit 1 students will take part in the Homecoming Parade which begins at 3:30 this afternoon. The parade line up begins at 3pm at “the former Sav-a-Lot” (‘vintagely’ it was IGA and it will soon be the new Happy Hearts Senior Center). The parade will travel on Market Street to the Superman Statue, Left in front of the Metropolis City Hall on 5th Street and right onto Ferry Street at City National Bank. The parade will continue through lowertown Metropolis on Ferry Street making it’s way to Washington Park to disperse.

WMOK will LIVE STREAM the parade on our facebook page – Be sure to tell your parade marchers to be watching for us and play it up for the video! We will be posted at 5th and Ferry Streets.

Project Hope Humane Society Announces New Rescue Dog T-Shirt Design

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Project Hope Humane Society is excited to announce the arrival of their new Rescue Dog t-shirt design.

These shirts feature a dog design on the back and the organization’s logo on the front left chest.

Short sleeve shirts are available in kiwi, blue, and bright pink colors, priced at $20 for sizes small to 3X.

Long sleeve shirts in blue or light pink cost $25 (sizes not shown).

Shirts can be held for 24 hours, and credit/debit card payments are accepted.

Cancer Warriors Walk for Hope Saturday - 10 to 1 - Dorothy Miller Park

a day of fun for cancer patients, caregivers and family members of all ages - bounce houses, games, activities, prizes, food available for purchase and more

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – We invite you to join us at the Cancer Warriors Walk for Hope on Saturday! This will take place at Dorothy Miller Park on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

The event is open to the public – no registration is needed and leashed pets are welcome.

Shawnna Rhine of the Southern Seven Health Department told WMOK that she wants folks to understand this is not a fundraiser – this will be a day of fun for cancer patients, caregivers and family members of all ages – bounce houses, games, activities, prizes, food available for purchase and more!

WMOK’s Kim Comer will be there live on Saturday to enjoy the festivities and Angie Lockard will guide us through our Saturday morning on your radio!

We should point out that vendors for the Massac County Farmers Market may still set up that day at Dorothy Miller Park. Vendors will need to make sure not to set up in the pavilion – but you can set up tables and tents to the east side of the pavilion, near the parking area.

The History of Homecoming: Now & Then

Homecoming has become an elaborate celebration for today’s high school students, alumni, and community members but how did this happen and why?

Each year a sporting event held on the school’s home turf is dubbed the “homecoming game.” Typically it’s a football game played in the fall.

Surrounding this exciting game are the festivities of homecoming week. Dress days for students throughout the week such as crazy hair day, school spirit day, etc., an exciting pep rally, bonfire, parade through the community, tailgating before the game, and high school dance to follow are among the common events that make up homecoming week.

So what is the history of homecoming, how did this all begin, and why do we even make it a big deal anyway?

The earliest beginnings of homecoming date back to college alumni football games held in the early 1900s to bring everyone back home and boost school spirit. It’s debated who hosted the first official homecoming game.

Notably, the University of Illinois football team was on a losing streak for several years against a rival, The Chicago Maroons. It was believed that if they could bring everyone back and rally behind the team, they could change their luck and pull off a W.

They were successful and beat the Maroons 3-0 in front of over twelve thousand attendees. This was among some of the first homecoming events to be recorded. The traditions of homecoming were quickly adopted by high schools around the country.

Homecoming’s tradition of having a king and queen along with their court came about later down the road through the floats of a homecoming parade. Nowadays, the homecoming court is typically selected by the student body.

We had a fantastic time at the Happy Hearts Senior Center on Thursday morning helping folks there make the best use of their technology!

We want to recap on what we covered this morning so that those of you who missed it will know what you missed and those of you who were there can we visit what you need to practice.

First and foremost is texting

Texting is a good way to communicate back and forth with family members, neighbors, friends and your texting buddies.

We want you to start a daily routine of texting! We suggest checking your texts in the morning and maybe sending a text to family or grandkids or your texting buddy to say hello. You can keep your ears open for the ding of a reply or check back and forth. Then check it again in the afternoon as you wind your day down. You can do it with your morning coffee and with your afternoon snack.

Let WMOK be one of the texts you send in the mornings – you can just say “hi”, you can request a song, tell us what you have planned for the day or any little thing your heart desires. You can of course text us anytime. Our mornings start pretty early here in preparation for the WMOK Morning Show – so if you text late in the day, you may not receive a reply until later the next morning. (We wouldn’t dare text you when we arrive)

We also suggest a “daily texting buddy”. This is someone that you make plans to text and touch bases with each morning. Perhaps you just say hello and make sure that one another are “accounted for” – maybe it turns into a conversation in which you reply back and forth throughout your morning – either way, we think that you’ll find that you enjoy this bit of texting communication.

Congrats to the Patriots boys golf team on their SIRR Ohio division championship yesterday at Hickory Ridge. The team was led by medalist Luke Maurer who fired a 76 and joined by Eli Brown, Gabe Rottmann, and Preston Summers who also made the All-Conference team

Lady Patriots Volleyball is halfway through the conference schedule and remains undefeated in SIRR play after their strong win last night over Carterville. Great job girls, keep up the stellar play.

MCHS Boys Soccer keeps rolling after another statement SIRR win yesterday defeating Carterville/Herrin 5-1. The boys are now (7-1) in SIRR play and (13-1-1) on the season. Another big week next week as they seek to keep up an outstanding season
