Today Is

National Fajita Day

Get some steak sizzling over an open flame because August 18 is National Fajita Day. It’s a day to celebrate the authentic taste of the Southwest with the fiesta of flavor known as the fajita. Throw in some awesome black beans or even add a little hot sauce, guacamole, sour cream, or cheese. The combinations are endless. It’s National Fajita Day so you know what you’ve got to do (eat fajitas, obviously).

Massac County Grand Jury Returns Indictment – Involuntary Manslaughter – against Jonathon Riley in Death Of Samuel Stallions in Metropolis in early May

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – On August 18th Massac County State Attorney Josh Stratmeyer advised that a Massac County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against Jonathon J Riley for the offense of Involuntary Manslaughter in connection with the death of Samuel Scott Stalions at the Acee’s Truck Stop in Metropolis on May 2.

The indictment alleges that Riley recklessly performed an act likely to cause death or great bodily harm in that he held Stalions on the ground by placing his kneed on the neck of Stalions – thereby causing the death of Stalions.

The release advises that the Metropolis Police Department conducted a thorough investigation of the matter and the grand jury received testimony from numerous witnesses over multiple days of testimony prior to returning the indictment.

The statement points out that the charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

St. John’s Church to Hold Outdoor Church Service on Sunday – Bring Your Lawn Chair

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – WMOK spoke this week with Morgen Eckenberg McNichols, a member of St. John’s Church about the recent fire and their rebuilding process.  Morgen expressed to WMOK that it has been an understandably difficult and trying time for the church but their faith holds strong.  She said their church and it’s families look forward to growing the church back and using this trial to show that faith can withstand any tragedy.

St. John’s Church will continue their tradition of fellowship as they have never missed a Sunday service despite weather or circumstances.  All are invited to join them this Sunday (August 20) at 10:30 for outside church service on the grounds of St. John’s Church.  Folks are asked to bring their lawn chair.

Morgen shared with us a photo of the church as they want to remember it in all of it’s beauty

Local photographer and drone operator Kevin Choate, whose home neighbors the church shared drone footage of the church before the fire to his social media.  We will independently confirm with Mr. Choate – but as we understand it this footage was taken over he weekend preceding the fire.

See the footage below:

St. John’s has issued a statement below:

St. John’s would like to reach out to the community to say thank you to everyone who has offered support and everyone who is praying for our church and it’s families.

A special thank you to all of the firefighters, police, and emergency personnel that worked the scene and are continuing to help us through this process.

St. John’s sanctuary has stood through lots of storms and trials in the past 129 years, we may have lost our walls, but we will rise from the ash and rebuild our home.

However, our fellowship and members are still standing and thanking the Lord for our safety and the new opportunities coming our way.

Our church family will withstand this and continue fellowship as we have never missed a service despite weather or circumstances.  Please feel free to join us, this Sunday at 10:30 for our outside church service at our grounds, bring your own chair.

Most of all, please take this time to remember how blessed we are and that the gospel message of Jesus will not be hindered by the this fire.

We look forward to growing our church back and using this trial to show that faith can withstand any tragedy.

Again, thank you all for the continued prayers and support.

We’ll have more on the rebuilding of St. John’s in next week’s WMOK News Check.

Metropolis Abatements Are Back in Effect Following a Stretch of Rain

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Metropolis Abatement Officer John Roman told WMOK on Wednesday’s Coffee Break program that with the rain having moved out of the area – he is back into abatements.

Roman said that he and Metropolis Mayor Canada had discussed their difficulty in keeping city properties mowed with all of the rain we were experiencing and didn’t feel it would be fair to abate properties unless they “were going to abate themselves”.

Roman has resumed abatements this week.

If there is a property with high grass or other issues that you feel may cause reason for abatement – please call the Metropolis Mayors Office at 618-524-4016

We’ll have both Officer Roman and Mayor Canada’s Coffee Breaks Uploaded to the website later today – check the WMOK Coffee Break archive here later in the day.

Dr. Jonathan Walters Joins WMOK for the First Wellness Wednesday

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Dr. Jonathan Walters of Massac Memorial Hospital joined us for the first edition of Wellness Wednesday this week.

Dr. Walters told WMOK, “We have seen several cases of strep throat – which would be sore throat, tender nodes along the front of the neck – sometimes with fever.  We’ve also seen several cases of Covid recently – so if we’re having any upper respiratory symptoms, sore throat, headache, eye pain fatigue, body aches – typical flu-like symptoms – we need to remember that Covid still is out there and that it is something that we definitely need to test for.”

He went on to say – if you’re having any of that upper respiratory stuff – don’t blow it off as simple allergies (allergies are also going around with all the wet weather we have had lately) make sure that covid is still in your mind.

We discussed much more on the topic.

8 Weird Disasters from History

Florida’s weather is often predictable—but few people would have expected “partly cloudy with a chance of golf balls” as the weather forecast. In this episode of The List Show, editor-in-chief Erin McCarthy dives into some of history’s most peculiar disasters.

When you think of a disaster, things like hurricanestornadoes, floods, and earthquakes probably come to mind. But some catastrophes aren’t quite that run-of-the-mill.

On September 1, 1969, the Florida weather forecast was “partly cloudy with a chance of golf balls.” Residents of Punta Gorda were stunned when, in the words of one newspaper, “dozens and dozens and dozens” of dimpled white balls rained upon the city during an otherwise commonplace rainstorm.

More than 150 years earlier and an entire ocean away, a huge vat of porter at London’s Horse Shoe Brewery broke open on October 17, 1814, sending an estimated 3500 barrels’ worth of beer, or about 1 million pints, into the surrounding streets.

Boston’s Great Molasses Flood of 1919, meanwhile, released 2.3 million gallons of what has been called “sweet, sticky death.”

On this episode of  The List Show, Mental Floss editor-in-chief Erin McCarthy explores toxic smog, a downpour of mystery meat, and a sticky situation for Pepsi.

Woody Woodpecker was based on a real bird

A disrupted honeymoon led to cartoon gold.

A loud enough nuisance can distract even the most Zen-like stoics among us. How often have you been working on something only to be interrupted by the sounds of construction? Or maybe a dog barking next door has kept you from concentrating. We can all relate to a tiny annoyance that builds and builds until we erupt. That’s what makes Woody Woodpecker such a universal character.

While on their honeymoon in a small cottage, newlyweds Walter and Gracie Lantz found their peace disrupted. What should’ve been a romantic getaway nearly turned into a shootout when Walter threatened to gun down the pesky pest.

Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse:
SAFE Fund And Community Policing

WMOK spoke with Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse earlier this year about the SAFE fund and community policing.

Chief Masse told WMOK that the SAFE fund, Safe And Fun Education, is a charity program geared towards the kids. The SAFE fun is used for events such as Trunk or Treat and the End of Summer Bash at the Metropolis City Pool.  The SAFE fund also allows for the Metropolis Police Department to provide pencils and other needed items to Metropolis Elementary School.

Masse said they are taking donations – those in the community who would like to donate – just bring your donation to the Metropolis Police Department at 1020 Broadway St, Metropolis.  Please be sure to put SAFE Fund in the Memo line of the check
