Flag Retirement Ceremony at Fort Massac on Monday, May 15 – Learn How to Properly Dispose of an American Flag
As folks begin to freshen up their properties for Spring and Summer we’ve had several to ask how they should dispose of American Flags when they have become tattered from the weather and it is time for them to be retired.
The Flag Code suggests that when a flag has served its useful purpose, “it should be destroyed, preferably by burning.” For individual citizens, this should be done discreetly so the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or desecration.
Many American Legion posts – Metropolis American Legion Auxiliary-Overton P. Morris Post 306 included – conduct disposal ceremonies of unserviceable flags. Such ceremonies are particularly dignified and solemn occasions for the retirement of unserviceable flags.

Locally you may take your old flags to the Metropolis American Legion Auxiliary-Overton P. Morris Post 306 at 321 Market Street in Metropolis. A drop box is provided in front of the American Legion so that you may leave your flag anytime.
