Bicycle Safety Tips and Laws
As a general rule, bicyclists must obey the same traffic laws as vehicle drivers. The following laws and safety rules are particularly important for bicyclists:
  • Always ride with the traffic flow, as close to the right edge of the road as possible.
  • Obey all traffic signals, pavement markings and directions given by police officers.
  • Use hand signals to let drivers know your intentions.
  • Bicycling after dark is very hazardous. Bicycles must be equipped with a front light that reaches 500 feet and a rear, red reflector.
  • Wearing light-colored, reflective clothing increases your visibility to other drivers during the day and night.
  • Learn to look over your shoulder without losing your balance or swerving left.
  • Do not pass on the right. Motorists often will not look for passing cyclists in that direction.
  • When moving the same speed as traffic, ride in the middle of the lane, especially at busy intersections.
  • Keep both hands on the brakes. Allow extra stopping time in the rain.
  • Be alert for cars pulling out and make eye contact with the drivers to ensure you have been seen.
  • Do not weave between parked cars.

In addition to state laws, many municipalities have ordinances restricting bicycles in certain areas. Contact local law enforcement agencies in the areas where you plan to ride.

Massac Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Asks Community Members to Help in Promoting Awareness and Raising Funds for National Hospital Week

In honor of National Hospital week May 7-13 2023 the Massac Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is asking local businesses for their help in promoting awareness and to raise funds for the Massac Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, which began serving our community in the early 1950s.

There are two ways businesses can help.

One way that businesses may take part is by placing a Receipt/Donation Jar at the point of sale in their business this week – May 7-13.   Businesses can prominently display this Jar/Box and encourage customers to either drop in their receipts or to drop in a donation.   At the end of the week, the Auxiliary hopes that your business would donate a percentage of the total receipts total from the jar. The percentage would be of your choosing. It could be 5% or 10% or whatever you choose.

The second way your business can help is by asking your customers if they would like to purchase a Show Your Love Sign for a dollar or two. The small sign would then be taped in a visible location at your business.   If your business would be able to help the auxiliary out with one or both of these fundraising campaigns, please let one of the auxiliary members know so that they can get you a Receipt/Donation Jar and/or some Show Your Love Signs for your business.

If you would be willing to help, please contact:
Michele Longworth, auxiliary president – 618-638-0555 call or text
Kelley Sullivan, board member – 618-967-2708
Tracie Berry, board secretary – 618-645-2726
