Today and Tonight – A few thunderstorms will be possible after midnight, mainly over the western half of the region. Locally heavy rain and lightning will be the primary concerns.

Saturday through Thursday – A small chance of thunderstorms is forecast Saturday through Sunday. A few strong storms with gusty winds and small hail will be possible each afternoon. Otherwise, locally heavy rainfall and lightning will accompany all thunderstorms. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast Monday into
Tuesday, during which at least a few strong to severe thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. Isolated storm chances are confined to mainly southeast Missouri by Wednesday and Thursday. Any thunderstorm activity will produce lightning and locally heavy rainfall.

41-Year Old Pope County Illinois Man Named as Victim in Metropolis Truck Stop Gaming Room Homicide on Tuesday Night

(WMOK – Metropolis, IL) The name of the victim in Tuesday night’s homicide at a Metropolis truck stop gaming room has been released.  On Thursday afternoon Chief Harry Masse of the Metropolis Police Department advised that the victim has been identified as Samuel S. Stalions age 41, of Golconda, IL.

 

Officers were called to the Metropolis Acee’s Truck Stop on Tuesday just after 10:30pm for a fight in progress.  Chief Harry Masse advised that when Metropolis Officers arrived they observed the victim laying on the floor in the gaming room and initiated first aid measures before the victim was transported to Massac Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased from his injuries around 11:30pm

 

Video footage viewed by officers at the scene showed that Stalions was pepper sprayed and then attacked in the Acee’s truck stop gaming room near I-24 in Metropolis.  The video revealed that the victim was knocked to the ground before 36 year old Jonathon J. Riley of Kirksey, KY choked the victim.  Riley then put his knee on the victim’s neck using the weight of his body to put additional pressure on the victim’s neck until he became unconscious.

 

Jonathon J. Riley,36, Kirksey, KY was arrested and charged with 1 st degree murder and was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

 

WMOK confirmed with the Massac County Sheriff’s Department on Friday morning that Riley has now been release with a notice to appear.

 

WMOK has requested further details regarding upcoming court dates from the Massac County State’s Attorney.

Chief Masse Discusses April’s Counterfeit Arrest in Metropolis – Women from Urbana and Champaign Face Forgery Charges

(WMOK – Metropolis, IL) Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse sang the praises of local Family Dollar Store Manager Connie Morse when he joined us in late April.

 

On April 10th Morse made officers aware that the perpetrators had passed counterfeit one hundred dollar bills at the Family Dollar on east 10th Street in Metropolis.  A Massac County Deputy went to look for the vehicle while MPD officers went to Family Dollar to get more information.

 

A traffic stop on the vehicle was conducted when the vehicle was located in the 600 block of W. 10th Street in Metropolis. Lanaeja D. Carter, 22 of Urbana Illinois and Jasmine D. Roach, 32 of Champaign Illinois were charged with Theft and Forgery. They were lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.

 

Each Carter and Roach were released on $750 bond on April 17th.  Carter will appear on May 9th at 8:45 on one count of forgery.  Roach was scheduled to appear on Thursday on two counts of forgery – a motion to continue was filed and that preliminary hearing has been reset for June 8 at 1pm.

 

Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse advised that the investigation revealed that the suspects used counterfeit $100 bills at Big John’s and Dollar General as well.

 

Masse said Connie is part of a great community partnership that they want to have with all business owners and employees in Metropolis.

Massac County Farmers Market – Dorothy Miller Park – 7a to Noon

The Massac County Farmer’s Market takes place at Dorothy Miller park on east Front Street in Metropolis and is open Saturdays from 7 am- 12 pm.

There is no fee to set up at the Massac County Farmers Market however it is asked that vendors register with Alexis.  You can call Alexis at 618-524-5811 or email at MassacFB1@gmail.com.

Alexis told WMOK  on Coffee Break that she has several new vendors lined up for the Market – produce, eggs, plants, jewelry and crafts and live chicks.  Gary Verbarg has updated that he has cabbage, banana peppers, jalapeno peppers, broccoli, and red and yellow tomatoes available at his residence, 1131 Country Club Rd.

Alexis continues to follow up with vendors and contact new ones.  Alexis advised that there is plenty of space available for vendors at Dorothy Miller Park and she hopes that folks will take advantage of the opportunity to share their wares.

The shopping experience at the market is contingent upon how many vendors show up each week. We encourage folks to spread the word and help to get plenty of vendors and shoppers at the Massac County Farmers Market

8A-1P – Massac County HCE Rummage Sale at the Massac County Community Center. They will have a large variety of items available.

Though the weather looks a bit questionable – Project Hope Humane Society hopes to have their second Spring yard sale of the season this Saturday, May 6th.

Proceeds go towards operating the shelter and caring for it’s residents.  The sale will be located in the Project Hope parking lot at 1698 W. 10th St. Metropolis from 10 am to 2pm.

Metropolis City Clean Up Week – Monday, May 15 – Friday, May 19 – Items must be at your normal pick up point and within 5 feet of the trash container. All items must be bagged or in a container. Anything loose must be bundled so that one person can handle it. No construction debris, demolition debris or electronics will be picked up.



Memorial Day is Monday May 29, 2023 – Memorial Day is a national holiday and a federal holiday.  On Memorial Day you can expect Banks, government offices and some businesses to be closed.  The Metropolis City Pool will open on Memorial Day and admission will be free.
