Chief Harry Masse: “75 Pounds of Drugs Collected at April’s National Drug Take Back Day in Metropolis”

(WMOK – METROPOLIS, IL) – Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse tells WMOK that seventy-five pounds of expired and unused prescription drugs were collected at the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day took place at the Metropolis Police Department on Saturday April 12th. Chief Masse went on to talk about the issues created by opiates. He discussed the rise in fentanyl overdoses and use of Narcan by local law enforcement. (Hear our discussion below)

Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition Director Holly Windhorst hopes to keep the momentum going from April’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and get the community involved in disposing of expired and unused prescription drugs properly.

Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition Director, Holly Windhorst told WMOK, “We had a great turnout and are thankful to the community members who dropped off their old prescriptions for proper disposal. It’s very important to keep old medications out of the wrong hands because it could lead to addiction.”

MCDAC invites folks to pick up prescription disposal bags locally to help in efforts to remove expired and unused pharmaceuticals from circulating in the community and to keep them from entering our environment by being “flushed”. Prescription disposal bags may be picked up at Metropolis Drugs 1 , Metropolis Drugs 2, Massac Memorial Hospital Clinics, Massac County Mental Health, Southern Seven Health Department, Metropolis City Hall, Joppa City Hall, Brookport City Hall, Metropolis Fire Department, Metropolis Police Department, Massac County Sheriff’s Department, COPE Food Pantry, Loftus Mcmanus Funeral Home and the Metropolis Library.

Each Prescription Disposal Bag bag can dispose of 45 pills OR 6 oz. of liquid OR 6 patches. Just fill the bag, add warm water, and dispose of the bag in your own trash.

Please contact us at (618)316-4472 or massacdrugawareness@gmail.com if you would like a bag delivered to your home by a MCDAC volunteer. They will leave the bag(s) on your porch so no contact is necessary.

You can also stop by the MCDAC office at 506 Market in Metropolis. Bags are available for pick up Monday – Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
