Massac High School Teacher Charged with Criminal Damage to Property in Incident at Massac High School

/ WMOK

WMOK received questions from listeners during the week of January 16th about an incident that had allegedly taken place at Massac County High School on Friday January 13th.

While the details varied a bit with each telling – it was apparent to us here at WMOK that an incident did seem to have taken place in which one teacher cut the tire of another teacher on property at Massac High.

WMOK spoke with Massac County School Superintendent Jason Hayes in detail on Friday the 20th regarding the information we had received.

Mr Hayes told WMOK:

“We currently have an active investigation of an incident that occurred on school grounds at Massac County High School.  Unfortunately I cannot comment on this until the investigation concludes.”

In following up on the story this week WMOK checked in with our City and County law enforcements for calls to the high school on that day.  Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse told WMOK that Metropolis Police were called and initiated a report for criminal damage to property in which a tire was cut on a car that belonged to a teacher at the high school.  The car was in the Massac High parking lot at the time.

Chief Masse advised that Andrew N. Margherio,43, Metropolis was identified as the offender as the damage was captured on video by the high school security system.

Margherio was charged with criminal damage to property.  Margherio turned himself in to the Massac County Sheriff’s Office and was released on bond.

Margherio is listed on the Massac High School website as an educator in the Department of Science.  In checking the staff contacts listing for Massac High School, WMOK did not find Margherio listed.

Upon updating the story today WMOK has reached out to Mr. Hayes for any additional comments.

Mr Hayes told WMOK:

I don’t have anything at this time.  We are still meeting and following contractual protocols at the moment.

We will expect to bring you further details (to the degree to which he can speak on it based on the status of the school’s investigation at that time) when Mr. Hayes joins us in studio for his regularly scheduled Coffee Break on February 8.
