Mayor Canada Discusses Plans for 2023 with WMOK

When Metropolis Mayor Don Canada joined WMOK for Coffee Break in December – we discussed what’s on schedule for Metropolis in 2023.

Mayor Canada cited the North Avenue resurfacing project – which is likely to take place in the spring.

The city is in search of a new spot for our Tennis Courts as they need to be rebuilt.  The Sports Park was observed as a location, however Canada advised that the ground of the area they looked at lays too low in spots to accommodate the Tennis Courts.

Canada noted that during the last two budgets the city focused on increasing the manpower and resources of the Police Department and Fire Department and for 2023 the focus will be new equipment and resources for the Street Department.

Canada is also excited about the prospect of reduced square footage home in Metropolis in the coming year.

Mayor Canada told WMOK that the city is running their budget much the way folks run their budget at home – getting competitive bids on work and trying to cut costs where possible.

Did you know tips were introduced in the late 1800s by wealthy Americans returning from Europe?Tipping, which began as a way to ensure quality service from waiters, has evolved into the primary way of expressing kindness and appreciation. Since its introduction, tipping has become a custom and formed the basis of the tipped wage. The latter has sparked much controversy, leaving many waiters dissatisfied with their earnings. Be Kind To Food Servers Month was established to raise awareness of wage disparities and urge customers to tip more generously.

Barbara Walters, dead at 93, was cultural fixture, TV icon

“I do think about death,” she told The Associated Press in 2008 as she was closing out her eighth decade. But if death got the last word, Walters had the nation’s ear in the meantime, she made clear, with amusement, as she recalled the zany Broadway hit “Spamalot,” based on a Monty Python film.

“You know the scene where they’re collecting dead bodies during a plague, and there’s a guy they keep throwing in the heap, and he keeps saying, ‘I’m not dead yet’? Then they bash him on the head, and he gets up again and says, ‘I’m not dead yet!’

“He’s my hero,” Walters said with a smile.
