Yesterday evening the Regional Board of School Trustees conducted an Annexation Hearing regarding the petition that was filed on June 27, 2022, by the Board of Education of Joppa-Maple Grove Unit District #38 asking for the annexation of Joppa-Maple Grove Unit District #38 into Massac County Unit District #1 and dissolving Joppa-Maple Grove Unit District #38.
Testimony was heard from supporters and those in opposition of the annexation. Public comments were heard.
The Board of Trustees approved the petition to place the question of annexation of Joppa-Maple Grove Unit 38 by Massac Unit 1 on the ballot at the next consolidated election currently scheduled for April 4, 2023.
The question of annexation will now go to the voters in both taxing districts (Joppa-Maple Grove & Massac Unit 1).
If the referendum passes in both districts, the annexation will move forward no sooner than the 2024/2025 school year.
If the referendum fails to pass in either district, the issue dies and both districts continue to operate as they are now.
