Dog Park Coming to Metropolis' Dorothy Miller Park - WMOK's Discussion with Mayor Jeffords

METROPOLIS, IL – Four-legged residents of Metropolis will soon have a new place to run and play. During a March City Council meeting, officials approved the development of a dedicated dog park at the north end of Dorothy Miller Park.

The move comes after ongoing discussions regarding community needs for a secure, off-leash area for local pets. Dorothy Miller Park, known for its scenic riverfront views and abundance of trees, was selected as the ideal site due to its central location and available space at the northern boundary.

What to Expect

While the project is in the early stages following council approval, planned features for the new facility typically include:

Fenced-In Areas: Separate sections for large and small breed dogs to ensure safety for all sizes.

Agility Equipment: Basic obstacles for exercise and training.

Water Stations: Fresh water access for thirsty pups during the warmer Illinois months.

Shaded Seating: Benches for owners to relax while their dogs socialize.

Community Impact

Local advocates for the park believe this addition will not only benefit pet owners but also help maintain the cleanliness of the rest of Dorothy Miller Park by providing a designated spot for canine activity.

Mayor Jeffords told WMOK during our Coffee Break Program that work on the project is expected to begin in the next couple of months.

The park remains a hub for the Massac County Farmers Market and other community gatherings, so the dog park is being designed to complement these existing uses without interfering with the pavilion or vendor areas.
