Brookport, Illinois – Students from Brookport Elementary and Unity Elementary proudly represented Massac County in the annual School Block Challenge hosted by the National Quilt Museum in partnership with Moda Fabrics.

This yearly national contest invites students from across the country to design and create original quilt blocks, which are then displayed at the museum in Paducah, Kentucky. This year, more than 27 students from Massac County participated in the challenge, showcasing both creativity and craftsmanship.
All second-grade students at Brookport Elementary created individual quilt blocks under the guidance of their teacher, Rachael Sauerbrunn. In addition, 11 fifth- and sixth-grade students from both Unity and Brookport Elementary designed and constructed quilt blocks during art class taught by Missy Kern.
Each student designed their own unique block, learning valuable artistic and technical skills throughout the process. Students gained hands-on experience using sewing machines, practiced measuring and precision, explored color and fabric selection, and developed perseverance as they completed their projects from start to finish.
The completed quilt blocks were displayed in the gallery at the National Quilt Museum, giving students the exciting opportunity to see their artwork exhibited in a professional museum setting.

On February 26, students traveled to Paducah for a special field trip to view the School Block Challenge exhibit. While there, they toured the museum galleries and celebrated seeing their creations on display. Students also explored the vibrant riverfront and visited the famous Paducah Floodwall Murals, learning more about the rich artistic heritage of the region.
The experience provided students not only with artistic growth but also with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Through creativity, teamwork, and hands-on learning, Massac County students made a strong showing in this nationally recognized event.
For these young artists, the School Block Challenge was more than a contest — it was an opportunity to see their work celebrated, their skills strengthened, and their community proudly represented on a national stage.
