Metropolis Generator Theft Caught on Camera

WMOK – Metropolis, IL – On February 18, 2026, the Metropolis Police responded to a call regarding a theft incident in the 1800 block of Helm Street.

Upon arrival, officers were shown video evidence by the victim that captured two individuals in the act of stealing his generator.

The footage depicted the thieves loading the stolen generator onto a trailer that was being pulled by a bicycle.

Following the viewing of the video, officers were able to quickly identify the suspects as Jordyn A. Smith, 24, and Paul P. Mayotte, 32, both residents of Metropolis.

Thanks to the clear evidence and swift investigative work, authorities located the pair shortly after the incident.

Both individuals have been charged with theft and were issued notices to appear in court. The incident highlights the effectiveness of surveillance technology in helping law enforcement apprehend suspects.

The preceding information pertains to an arrest made by the Metropolis Police Department. This arrest was made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
