Massac County Sheriff Chad Kaylor talked about jail population during his December Coffee Break episode with WMOK.
Average jail population is currently running around 28 occupants.
Previous averages ranged as high as 42-27 daily and has been around 50 and close to 60, especially during the shutdown of Illinois Department of Corrections during the height of COVID.
Sheriff Kaylor explained to WMOK during this visit (and we discussed it extensively during our discussions at the time) the difficulty that this placed on small sheriff’s offices across the state. With the Illinois Department of Corrections halting intakes, jails were overcrowded and unsafe. In addition, food and housing costs expanded exponentially.
Kaylor advised during this visit and in a previous visit that the Illinois Department of Corrections did monetarily reimburse Massac County.
Sheriff Kaylor joins WMOK live for our Coffee Break Program on the second Tuesday of each month. Our January episode will air live on Tuesday, January 13th 2026.
