December Observances

December is designated as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month to raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, especially during the holiday season. The month serves as a reminder to plan for a safe ride home, promote designated drivers, and educate the public on the risks associated with impaired driving.

Bingo’s Birthday Month” is observed annually throughout December. The designation celebrates the popular game of bingo, which has a long history dating back to 1530 in Italy.

National Write a Business Plan Month takes place annually throughout the month of December. The observance encourages both aspiring and seasoned entrepreneurs to create or review their business plan as a strategic exercise for the coming year.

Universal Human Rights Month is observed every December to recognize and promote the fundamental rights and freedoms of all people, as established by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. It is a time for reflection on progress and for continuing the work of protecting human dignity through actions like raising awareness, advocating for others, and finding common ground.

Cookie Cutter Week: 1-7

Older Driver Safety Awareness Week is an annual event, typically held in early December, that focuses on helping older adults stay safe on the road by promoting safe driving skills, managing age-related changes, and exploring alternative transportation options. The 2024 week was held December 2–6. Key themes include understanding physical and cognitive changes, being proactive about health and vision, and planning for the future, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association and the Ohio Traffic Safety Office.

Monday, December 1, 2025

Rosa Parks Day – On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, a seamstress and secretary for the local NAACP chapter, refused to give up her seat in the “colored” section of a segregated bus to a white passenger after the “white” section was full. This act of civil disobedience was a pre-planned stand against Jim Crow laws and led to her arrest.

Her refusal sparked the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal event led by Martin Luther King Jr., which ultimately resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that bus segregation laws were unconstitutional.

World AIDS Day, designated on 1 December every year since 1988, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease.

Cyber Monday – Originally coined in 2005 by the National Retail Federation’s online division, Shop.org, the term “Cyber Monday” was created to encourage people to shop online at a time when in-store Black Friday sales were the dominant post-Thanksgiving event.

It capitalized on the trend of people returning to work with high-speed internet connections and continuing their holiday shopping from their desks.

Today, it is one of the biggest online shopping days of the year, with many retailers offering exclusive online deals, free shipping, and limited-time offers to attract customers who prefer the convenience of shopping from home to avoid the crowds associated with physical stores.

Meteorological winter is the three-month period from December 1st to February 28th (or 29th in a leap year) in the Northern Hemisphere, based on the annual temperature cycle rather than Earth’s orbit.

This definition was adopted by meteorologists because the months of December, January, and February consistently have the coldest average temperatures, making it easier to calculate and compare seasonal statistics year-to-year.

Sunday, December 7, 2025

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is observed annually on December 7 in the United States to honor those who died in the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
The surprise attack on December 7, 1941, by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service resulted in 2,403 American deaths and 1,178 injuries at the U.S. naval base. This event prompted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to call it “a date which will live in infamy,” leading to the U.S. declaration of war and entry into World War II. Congress officially designated December 7 as “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day” in 1994.
Observance and Traditions – While not a federal holiday, the day is marked in various ways. The U.S. flag is flown at half-staff until sunset by presidential proclamation. Commemoration events are held annually at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Hawaii, often including wreath-laying ceremonies. Events also occur across the country. Many observe a moment of silence at the time the attack began. The day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made and the attack’s historical significance.

December Observances

National Tie Month is observed annually throughout the month of December. The event honors the history and significance of the necktie as an essential part of business attire and personal style.
History of the Necktie
The modern necktie has a rich history that traces back centuries.
  • Ancient Origins: The earliest evidence of neckties can be found in the tomb of China’s first emperor, Shih Huang Ti, where terracotta soldiers wore neckcloths as early as 221 BC.
  • The Croatian Cravat: The more direct ancestor of the modern tie emerged in the 17th century during the Thirty Years’ War. Croatian soldiers wore silk scarves, known as cravats, which caught the eye of the Parisians. King Louis XIV of France adopted the style, making it a fashion staple among the aristocracy.
  • Modernization: During the Industrial Revolution, various fabrics became more accessible, and the tie evolved to a more modern and practical design. In 1920, a New York tie maker named Jesse Langdorf patented a new method of cutting fabric on a 45-degree angle, creating a tie that could keep its shape after knotting, which is still the standard method used today.

December Observances

National Pear Month is observed annually throughout the month of December. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) officially proclaimed December as National Pear Month in 2004 to highlight the flavor and versatility of the fruit, which is in peak season during the winter months.
Key Facts About Pears
  • Peak Season: December is an optimal time to celebrate because a wide abundance and variety of USA Pears are at their peak availability.
  • Varieties: There are over 100 varieties of pears, with more than ten primary types grown in Washington and Oregon (which account for the majority of U.S. commercial fresh pear production) including Green Anjou, Red Anjou, Bartlett, and Bosc.
  • Ripening: Unlike most fruits, pears ripen best off the tree. The key to checking for ripeness is applying gentle pressure to the neck of the pear; if it yields, the pear is ready to eat.
  • Nutritional Benefits: Pears are an excellent source of dietary fiber, providing over 20% of the daily recommended value in one medium pear. They are also a good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and potassium, and are naturally fat-, sodium-, and cholesterol-free.
  • Versatility: Pears can be enjoyed in a variety of sweet and savory dishes, such as in salads, with cheese, in baked goods, or even roasted with meats.

December Observances

Buckwheat Month” is an unofficial designation for the month of December, primarily promoted by the Oldways Whole Grains Council as its featured “Grain of the Month” for December.
About Buckwheat Month
The celebration encourages people to learn about and cook with buckwheat throughout December. While not an “official” national or international month-long observance, the Whole Grains Council has consistently assigned it to December in their calendar.
Why Celebrate Buckwheat?
Buckwheat is a highly nutritious pseudo-cereal (a seed used culinarily as a grain) that is naturally gluten-free.
  • Nutritional Benefits: It is a complete protein and a good source of fiber, magnesium, phosphorus, and antioxidants like rutin, which helps strengthen blood vessels.
  • Versatility: It can be used in a wide variety of dishes, from breakfast porridge and pancakes to soba noodles and risotto.
  • Seasonal Appropriateness: Its robust, earthy flavor is well-suited for winter dishes, and its red and green immature fruit colors can even match Christmas themes.
