METROPOLIS, IL – On behalf of the entire Metropolis and Massac County community, we extend a warm invitation to join us this weekend for the beloved annual Fort Massac Encampment! This is more than just a history festival for us—it’s a chance to share the rich story of our beautiful Ohio River town and the historic Fort Massac State Park.

The Encampment will be held this Saturday, October 18th, and Sunday, October 19th, 2025, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome you. Come see our town transform into the 18th-century frontier!

Step Right Up: Experience History Through Our Eyes

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for a family tradition, we encourage you to spend the day (or the whole weekend!) immersed in the life of the early American and colonial periods. Our local history is brought to life by hundreds of re-enactors who set up authentic military camps and buckskinner lodges right here on the riverbank.

Don’t Miss These Highlights:

  • The Mock Battle: Feel the rumble and hear the boom of cannons and muskets as the re-enactors stage a thrilling battle on the field, usually at 3:00 p.m. daily. It’s a spectacular show that truly brings the frontier conflicts to life.
  • The Settlers’ Village: Wander through the marketplace where local and visiting artisans demonstrate 18th-century crafts like weaving, blacksmithing, and cooking. You’ll find unique, handmade items and traditional fare—many of our local Boy Scouts are even cooking up period-appropriate food!
  • Music and Merriment: Listen to the lively sounds of the fife and drum corps and enjoy ongoing period entertainment and storytelling throughout the day.
  • Military Ceremonies: Catch the formal Posting of Colors in the morning and the moving Military Retreat and Closing Ceremonies at the end of each day.

A Weekend in Metropolis

Since admission is free, you’ll have plenty left over to explore what else Metropolis has to offer!

Our town is buzzing with activity this weekend, and we encourage you to stop by our local restaurants and shops. The Fort Massac Encampment is a decades-long tradition, and it’s a community event we look forward to all year.

Come be a part of our history this weekend! We look forward to seeing you at Fort Massac.

Local Businesses Unite for “Fall in Love with Local” Event in Metropolis

Local Businesses Unite for "Fall in Love with Local" Event in Metropolis

Metropolis is gearing up for an exciting initiative aimed at promoting local shopping as businesses come together for the inaugural “Fall in Love with Local” event. Starting October 17 and running until October 31, participants can pick up a Metropolis Mile Passport at any of the participating businesses.

Shoppers are encouraged to visit each stop listed on the passport, collecting signatures or stickers along the way for a chance to win a $25 Visa Gift Card. This event not only incentivizes shopping locally but also fosters community spirit and support for area businesses.

A group of dedicated local businesses is playing a crucial role in this initiative, including Flo’s On 45, Friends & Company, La Pizza di Shane, Camaran Simpson State Farm, Super Sips & SoFull Café, and The Tanning Boutique. These businesses have collaborated to bring the event to life and enhance awareness of the benefits of local shopping.

Participants are also encouraged to share their experiences on social media by posting photos and tagging the businesses involved, allowing them to earn extra entries in the giveaway. This event represents a significant step in strengthening the local economy and building a sense of community among residents and business owners alike.

Mark your calendars and get ready to explore Metropolis while supporting your local favorites!
