C.O.P.E. Food Pantry Distribution takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Metropolis at 1013 North Avenue from 9am until 3pm.  Please bring your photo I.D. and proof of Massac County Residency.

Monday thru Friday – Happy Hearts Morning Coffee Time – The Happy Hearts Senior Center: A Place for Ongoing Connection!

The Happy Hearts Senior Center remains a fantastic resource for those seeking to enhance their social wellness at any time of the year. Located at 7th and Pearl Streets in Metropolis, in the former IGA building, the center offers a welcoming environment for connection and community.

Join them for Coffee Time, held every morning at 7 AM. It’s a wonderful opportunity to relax, play card games, browse the internet, or enjoy a good book in their cozy foyer. Don’t forget to pick up the latest menu to discover all the exciting offerings at Happy Hearts!

For just a $1.00 donation, you can enjoy unlimited coffee.

If you’d like to stay for lunch, a delicious meal is served at 11:30 AM for a suggested $3.00 donation.

The center stays open until 2 PM, allowing ample time to socialize and unwind.

The Kincaid Mounds Archaeological Field Day

The Kincaid Support Organization will present a program at the Kincaid Mounds Historic Site. Formal presentations on the Mississippian Culture will begin at 10:00 AM and at 1:00 PM. There will be artifact displays, artifact identification, information tables, and a walking tour of Mound 8. (hiking shoes recommended) The program is free to the public. (restroom facilities available, but no refreshments sold) More information

FORT MASSAC ENCAMPMENT Education Day

Mark your calendars for Friday October 17th, 2025, as Fort Massac State Park will become the biggest History Classroom in Southern Illinois.  Step into the past and witness history come to life right before your eyes. From the French and Indian War to the early 1800s, your students will be fully immersed in historical events like never before. Our all-star team of volunteer re-enactors will be on hand to showcase demonstrations and presentations that will make history class the highlight of your school year! Say goodbye to boring textbooks and hello to an unforgettable learning experience. Ready to make history? Join us for Education Day!!! Buses are recommended to arrive at 9AM. Program will begin at 9:30AM and end at 2:00PM Each group will receive a schedule for the day upon arrival. Limited food vendors will be open. Students should bring sack lunches for a lunch break from 11AM – 12PM Merchants will sell items on a limited basis. Registration is not required but highly recommended due to high numbers of students attending. Recreation Time for Needle Crafters - Nifty Needles Meets from 4:30-5:30 on Friday Afternoons at the Metropolis Public Library

This weekly gathering invites residents aged 11 and up to explore their creativity through knitting, sewing, embroidery, and other personal crafting projects.

Participants will convene in the library’s basement every Friday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM to work on their individual projects. This group aims to provide a welcoming space for crafters to focus on their hobbies while enjoying a friendly atmosphere.

The Nifty Needles Group is perfect for both beginners learning a new skill and experienced crafters wanting to refine their techniques or tackle larger projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies and share their ideas.

Heather Carey, Heritage Program Manager/Tribal Liaison for the Shawnee National Forest and President of the Illinois Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association will present on the Cherokee Trail of Tears through southern Illinois. She will discuss the historical background leading up to the forced removal of the Cherokee, information about local resources related to the Trail, and initiatives being undertaken to learn more about the Trail and the Cherokee experience while traveling through southern Illinois. Arrival Event at Lewis & Clark State Historic Site (Day 1) – West Central IL –

On December 12, 1803, the Lewis & Clark Expedition arrived at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers and fixed on a place to build Camp River Dubois. This Arrival Event – December 13 & 14 – marks this arrival with reenactors, demonstrators, and more!

The event will feature exhibitors of vintage tools, firearms, 18th Century medicine, military reenactors, and artillery. Come see how the soldiers of the Corps of Discovery lived during their winter encampment in the Illinois Country from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is primarily inside the Interpretive Center.

St. Nicholas will also make an appearance for pictures and maybe a treat each day. Come learn about Christmas traditions in early 19th Century America. more info
