Metropolis Man Charged After False Suicide Threat

On September 16 officers from the Metropolis Police Department responded to a distressing report on I-24 at the Ohio Bridge regarding a suicidal individual threatening to jump. The call prompted a swift reaction from multiple agencies, including the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office, the McCracken County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), and the Metropolis Fire Department (MFD).

As a precaution, EMA and MFD prepared boats to assist if the situation escalated. However, upon further investigation, authorities determined that the report was a hoax.

Using cell phone tracking, police located the individual, identified as 40-year-old Michael J. Seaton of Metropolis, at the City Park near the swimming pool. Seaton claimed that there had been a misunderstanding regarding the situation.

He was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct for making a false report. Seaton was released on a notice to appear in court. Authorities continue to remind the public of the seriousness of such threats and the consequences of making false claims.

The preceding information pertains to an arrest made by the Metropolis Police Department. This arrest was made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
