Hours Long Manhunt Ends in Massac County After Stolen Vehicle Pursuit on Thursday Afternoon – WMOK Metropolis IL

WMOK (Metropolis, IL)  began covering the incident on Thursday afternoon as soon as the call from McCracken County was broadcast reporting a stolen vehicle en route to Metropolis.

A manhunt that started moments after noon on Thursday concluded without incident, following a tense chase and manhunt that spanned several hours.

The suspect, who was traveling toward Metropolis on I-24, drew the attention of law enforcement after the vehicle was reported stolen in McCracken County.

Chief Harry Masse of the Metropolis Police Department navigated through traffic congestion caused by ongoing construction work on the interstate to engage in the pursuit. At times, speeds reached up to 100 mph as the suspect took the Big Bay exit and continued the chase onto Route 145.

The pursuit intensified when the suspect crashed the stolen vehicle near Michael’s Equipment, leading to a foot chase. Local law enforcement quickly requested assistance from the Illinois State Police, who dispatched canine units to the area. A staging area was established for coordinated efforts.

Massac County Sheriff Chad Kaylor issued a statement advising residents to avoid the area of Route 145 and Marion Road while the manhunt was underway. Residents were urged to lock their doors and vehicles and report any suspicious activity to 911.

At approximately 4:27 PM, the Massac County Sheriff’s Office announced that deputies had located and apprehended the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Robert Browning.

Browning was booked into the Massac County Detention Center, where he faces charges related to the stolen vehicle, along with multiple out-of-state warrants.

Massac County Sheriff Chad Kaylor will join WMOK for our Coffee Break program on Tuesday, August 12, following the 8 AM WMOK News Check.

Massac Unit 1 Back to School on Monday

Teachers are In Service Today and Friday

As summer’s warmth fades, a bittersweet melancholy settles in. Days are shorter, laughter gives way to structure, and the carefree moments become memories. The familiar scent of freshly sharpened pencils mingles with the nostalgia of sun-soaked afternoons, reminding us that change is inevitable, even as we cling to fleeting joys.

It’s time to shift gears for back-to-school season. Parents can ease this transition by establishing a routine, organizing school supplies early, and discussing expectations with their children. These simple steps help create a smooth and positive start to the year.

While Massac County Unit 1 School News is our primary focus due to the Massac County Sports Sponsorships that are purchased by local businesses each year to allow WMOK to broadcast Massac County Sports, we include information regarding Joppa/Maple Grove as well as other schools in our Southernmost area as we are able.

Yesterday morning, Lead School Resource Officer Carl Manley joined us in studio for a discussion on school safety and how important it is for the SRO to have a comfortable rapport with the students.  (We anticipate that this interview will begin to appear online this afternoon.  You can always check the “news feed” at the bottom of the “Yellow Sheet” to see new articles as they are published.)

See the WMOK School and Sports News Section of our website for details and information as it is added.

August Happy Heart Senior Center Menu and Reflecting on Social Wellness: A Continuation Beyond July

While July has been designated as Social Wellness Month, the importance of embracing healthy relationships and social interactions extends far beyond a single month. The connections we forge with friends, family, and community members play a vital role in our overall well-being throughout the year. Strong bonds create supportive environments that nurture personal growth and foster a sense of belonging.

Five Ongoing Tips to Enhance Your Social Wellness

1. Engage in Meaningful Conversations: Don’t let the dialogue stop after July. Continue to connect with others by having genuine conversations. Ask open-ended questions and practice active listening. This deepens your relationships and enhances your understanding of different perspectives.

2. Join a Group or Community Activity: Explore local groups, volunteer organizations, or interest-based clubs that interest you. Engaging in community activities is a fantastic way to meet like-minded individuals and build lasting friendships.

3. Cultivate Existing Relationships: Make it a habit to invest time in your friendships and family ties. Send a text, plan a catch-up over coffee, or simply check in regularly. Consistently showing that you value these connections helps to maintain and strengthen them.

4. Practice Empathy and Kindness: Continue to foster understanding in your interactions. Show empathy and kindness in your daily life, whether through small gestures or being there for someone who needs support. This will significantly improve your relationships over time.

5. Attend Social Events: Look for local events, workshops, or gatherings where you can expand your social network. These occasions provide excellent opportunities for socializing and building meaningful connections.

By continuously focusing on enhancing social interactions and fostering community, we can enrich our lives and promote our overall well-being throughout the year. It’s important to carry the spirit of Social Wellness Month into our everyday lives, committing to nurturing positive relationships that contribute to a healthier, happier existence.

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL  — The Metropolis Public Library is excited to invite crafty people to its community initiative, the Nifty Needles Group.  This weekly gathering invites residents aged 11 and up to explore their creativity through knitting, sewing, embroidery, and other personal crafting projects.

Participants will convene in the library’s basement every Friday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM to work on their individual projects. This group aims to provide a welcoming space for crafters to focus on their hobbies while enjoying a friendly atmosphere.

“Crafting is a wonderful way to express creativity and connect with others,” said the library’s program coordinator, Colby Kennedy. “We want to create an inclusive environment where individuals can share their skills, learn from one another, and enjoy refreshments provided by the library.”

The Nifty Needles Group is perfect for both beginners learning a new skill and experienced crafters wanting to refine their techniques or tackle larger projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies and ideas to share.

In addition to hands-on crafting, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversation with fellow enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community around shared interests.

The “Sturgeon Moon” is the name given to the full moon that appears in August. This name originates from Native American traditions, particularly those in the Great Lakes region, where sturgeon fishing was most active during this time. The Farmers’ Almanac and other sources use this name to refer to the August full moon. From Almanac.com
