Metropolis, IL – The 32nd Annual Gospel Music Cancer Benefit is set to take place on Thursday, August 7th, at the First Methodist Church, starting at 7 PM. This beloved event continues its tradition of bringing the community together in support of a vital cause—cancer research.

The concert will feature the renowned Tribute Quartet, hailing from Nashville, TN. Known for their powerful performances and heartfelt harmonies, the quartet promises to deliver an uplifting evening of gospel music that resonates with fans of all ages.

This year’s concert is free to attend, and attendees are encouraged to make a voluntary contribution. A free will offering will be collected during the event, with all donations going directly to support cancer research initiatives.

Organizers of the event express their gratitude to the community for its continued support over the years, which has helped raise significant funds for cancer-related causes. “Every dollar makes a difference,” said Martha Bormann, a spokesperson for the organizing committee. “Together, we can contribute to the fight against cancer and support those who are affected by this disease.”

The First Methodist Church, a long-time host of the benefit, provides a welcoming environment for attendees to gather in fellowship and support a meaningful cause.

Community members, families, and gospel music enthusiasts are encouraged to mark their calendars for an inspiring evening filled with music, hope, and charity. Come join the fight against cancer and enjoy an exceptional performance from The Tribute Quartet.

The “Sturgeon Moon” is the name given to the full moon that appears in August. This name originates from Native American traditions, particularly those in the Great Lakes region, where sturgeon fishing was most active during this time. Shawnee National Forest is calling on passionate volunteers to join the mission of assisting with data collection on Snake Road during the important fall season road closure. As a Snake Road Sentinel, you’ll have the incredible opportunity to observe wildlife and monitor visitor engagement, contributing to meaningful conservation efforts.

This year’s workshop is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 10:00 am at the Mississippi River Bluff Ranger Station, or complete the training online.

If you participated in the spring workshop, you’re already set for the fall; just communicate with Alyssa to confirm your involvement in this noble endeavor.

At this training you will learn about the vital data collection methods and the vision for the fall season. The workshop will also illuminate previous successes, establish rules, and reinforce ethical guidelines for your role as a Snake Road Sentinel.

Following the workshop, you’ll have the option to visit Snake Road for a brief introduction to this beautiful area. While past volunteers can forgo the field demonstration, all new and returning volunteers must complete the workshop once a year to finalize essential paperwork.
Together, let’s foster a deeper connection with nature and make a lasting impact!
