This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for southern Illinois, southwest
Indiana, western Kentucky and southeast Missouri.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected today and into early
this evening. A storm or two may briefly become strong to severe with
gusty to damaging winds the main threat. Torrential rainfall will
accompany any storms and flash flooding may develop where any storms
persist.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Monday.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected each afternoon
through Monday. Isolated strong to severe storms are possible and
all storms will be capable of brief torrential rainfall.

Afternoon heat indices will climb into the 100 to 105 degree range
throughout the Quad State Wednesday through Saturday

Tuesday Night – A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 72. Calm wind.


Wednesday – A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

7.14.25 – Metropolis City Council Meeting Tonight

The Metropolis City Council meeting will take place from **7:00 to 8:00 p.m.** upstairs at the Metropolis City Hall, located at 106 West 5th Street. The city council meetings occur on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month.

Tonight’s agenda includes:

– **6:00 p.m.**: Police and Fire Commission meeting
– **6:50 p.m.**: Finance meeting, which will reconvene from the April meeting to amend the 2024-2025 budget for the police evidence fund. This meeting will also address pending litigation, personnel acquisition, real estate transactions, and collective bargaining.
– **7:00 p.m.**: City council meeting

There are no citizens’ or visitors’ requests on the agenda. In the mayor’s report, the council will consider the following motions:

1. Approve or reject an estimate from Brantley Repair for just over $4,700 for repairs to the landscape tractor used by the street department.
2. Approve or reject a quote from IMCO Utility Supply Company for supplies for the water department.
3. Approve or reject payments to Quint Utility and Excavating for work done at the water treatment plant, hauling soil for the street department, and clearing out and mulching for the light department.
4. Approve or reject a donation for the Harrah’s 2025 Back to School Supply Giveaway and discuss the amount to donate.
5. Approve or reject a payment of $150 for Southern Illinois Mayor Association dues.
6. Approve or reject the closure of Superman Square to 6th Street for the annual National Night Out events on Tuesday, August 5th, from 3:30 until 8:30 p.m.
7. Approve or reject a payment of $7,000 to Pyrotechnica as the final payment for the Independence Day fireworks.
8. Approve or reject two new service contracts from Howard D. Happy for the printers in the clerk’s office, the mayor’s office, and the Parks and Recreation department.
9. Approve or reject payments to the Jones Building for phase 3 roof replacement in the amount of $40,000 under the TIF redevelopment agreement.
10. Approve or reject payments to the Jones Building for phase 4 exterior work in the amount of $20,000 under the TIF redevelopment agreement.

In the Corporate Council report, there will be a motion to adopt an ordinance amending the fiscal year budget ending June 30, 2025, and another to implement a municipal grocery retailers occupation tax and a municipal grocery service occupation tax for the City of Metropolis. There will be a motion to approve or reject a resolution for improvements under the Illinois Highway Code for work on Metropolis Street from 5th Street to 1st Street, totaling $1.3 million.

The Massac County Youth Fair will feature the following events:

– **8:00 a.m.**: Weigh-in and entry deadline for goat wethers
– **9:00 a.m.**: Dairy cattle show
– Followed by the goat wetter show and the goat show
– **5:00 p.m.**: Dog show entry closes.
– Between **5:00 and 8:00 p.m.**, optional pre-registered entries will be accepted in the exhibit hall.
– **6:00 p.m.**: Dog show begins.
– **9:00 p.m.**: Release of dairy cattle and goats.

The Metropolis Public Library will hold its Kidz Club today from **3:30 to 4:30 p.m.** This week, children will use their creativity to imagine, create, and fuse with Perler beads. For questions, you can contact the Metropolis Public Library at 618-524-4312.

32nd Annual Gospel Music Cancer Benefit Set for August 7th in Metropolis

Metropolis, IL – The 32nd Annual Gospel Music Cancer Benefit is set to take place on Thursday, August 7th, at the First Methodist Church, starting at 7 PM. This beloved event continues its tradition of bringing the community together in support of a vital cause—cancer research.

The concert will feature the renowned Tribute Quartet, hailing from Nashville, TN. Known for their powerful performances and heartfelt harmonies, the quartet promises to deliver an uplifting evening of gospel music that resonates with fans of all ages.

This year’s concert is free to attend, and attendees are encouraged to make a voluntary contribution. A free will offering will be collected during the event, with all donations going directly to support cancer research initiatives.

Organizers of the event express their gratitude to the community for its continued support over the years, which has helped raise significant funds for cancer-related causes. “Every dollar makes a difference,” said Martha Bormann, a spokesperson for the organizing committee. “Together, we can contribute to the fight against cancer and support those who are affected by this disease.”
