* WHAT…Daily heat index values of 100 to 107.
* WHERE…Portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western
Kentucky, and southeast Missouri.
* WHEN…Until 7 PM CDT /8 PM EDT/ Friday.
* IMPACTS…Prolonged exposure to hot temperatures and high humidity
may cause heat illnesses.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…The first prolonged stretch of heat and
humidity of the season will amplify health impacts. Health impacts
will build with each successive day in the heat and humidity.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose
fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke.

Late-Night Patrol Leads to Drug Arrest at Dorothy Miller Park
On June 9, 2025, law enforcement encountered an unusual situation at Dorothy Miller Park when an officer on patrol discovered a vehicle parked after closing hours. The driver, identified as John C. Krempasky, 38, from Metropolis, was found asleep inside the vehicle. Upon waking him, the officer detected a strong odor of raw cannabis emanating from the car.
When questioned, Krempasky voluntarily handed over a clear baggie containing cannabis. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a total of nine additional baggies of cannabis, alongside methamphetamine and various drug paraphernalia. As a result of the findings, Krempasky was arrested and charged with possession of less than 30 grams of cannabis, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is currently being held at the Massac County Detention Center.
The preceding information pertains to an arrest made by the Metropolis Police Department. This arrest was made on the basis of probable cause and all arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Metropolis Public Library to Unearth Time Capsule on Tuesday, June 24th
Metropolis, IL – June 22, 2025 – Excitement is building in Metropolis, Illinois, as the Metropolis Public Library prepares to open its much-anticipated time capsule on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. (WMOK) Metropolis, IL — The Metropolis Public Library is excited to invite crafty people to its community initiative, the Nifty Needles Group. This weekly gathering invites residents aged 11 and up to explore their creativity through knitting, sewing, embroidery, and other personal crafting projects.
Participants will convene in the library’s basement every Friday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM to work on their individual projects. This group aims to provide a welcoming space for crafters to focus on their hobbies while enjoying a friendly atmosphere.
“Crafting is a wonderful way to express creativity and connect with others,” said the library’s program coordinator, Colby Kennedy. “We want to create an inclusive environment where individuals can share their skills, learn from one another, and enjoy refreshments provided by the library.”
The Nifty Needles Group is perfect for both beginners learning a new skill and experienced crafters wanting to refine their techniques or tackle larger projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies and ideas to share.
In addition to hands-on crafting, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversation with fellow enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community around shared interests.
The Metropolis Public Library is committed to serving the needs of its diverse population, and this new group is just one of many initiatives aimed at bringing people together through their common interests.
