WMOK Coffee Break – Metropolis Mayor Gregg Jeffords 5.22.25 – Part Three – Neighborhood Look Out, Helping the Elderly and Creating Community in Metropolis

WMOK (Metropolis, IL) – When Mayor Jeffords joined us for Coffee Break, we discussed the potential for neighborhood lookout groups.  Jeffords recalled a situation during which his neighborhood was experiencing petty theft crimes and neighborhood members created their own neighborhood Facebook page to keep in touch.

We also explored the importance of helping aging community members stay in touch and feel safe.

Older community members often rely on local radio as a vital source of news and information.  For many seniors, radio provides a sense of connection and familiarity, offering updates on local events, community services, and important announcements.

Younger individuals tend to maintain community connections by actively engaging on social media platforms. By sharing local news, events, and volunteer opportunities, they foster a sense of belonging.

WMOK seeks to bridge the intergenerational gap by incorporating elements that appeal to both older and younger community members in both radio and digital formats.

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL  — The Metropolis Public Library is excited to invite crafty people to its community initiative, the Nifty Needles Group.  This weekly gathering invites residents aged 11 and up to explore their creativity through knitting, sewing, embroidery, and other personal crafting projects.

Participants will convene in the library’s basement every Friday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM to work on their individual projects. This group aims to provide a welcoming space for crafters to focus on their hobbies while enjoying a friendly atmosphere.

“Crafting is a wonderful way to express creativity and connect with others,” said the library’s program coordinator, Colby Kennedy. “We want to create an inclusive environment where individuals can share their skills, learn from one another, and enjoy refreshments provided by the library.”

The Nifty Needles Group is perfect for both beginners learning a new skill and experienced crafters wanting to refine their techniques or tackle larger projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies and ideas to share.

In addition to hands-on crafting, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversation with fellow enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community around shared interests.

The Metropolis Public Library is committed to serving the needs of its diverse population, and this new group is just one of many initiatives aimed at bringing people together through their common interests.

2025 Metropolis Superman Celebration in Sight – Monumental Amounts of Fun – Hometown Superhero Volunteers and “Metropolis Ambassadors” Requested

WMOK (Metropolis, IL) – WMOK spoke with Lisa Davis of the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s monthly board meeting.  She advised that as the dust starts to settle on the official plans and schematics of the 2025 Superman Celebration they do remain in need of volunteers and local folks to serve in a ‘community ambassador’ type of role.

Davis explained that the volunteers could expect such tasks as manning booths and displays, setting up and taking down the infrastructure of the celebration and working in a ‘floating mode’ assisting with needed tasks during the celebration.  Volunteers can expect to operate as an ambassador of Metropolis of sorts as they will likely encounter multitudes of visitors who may have local questions.

Davis also told WMOK that local businesses are welcome to create a challenge among their employees to get out into the community and help bring the 2025 Superman Celebration to life.

Please contact Lisa Davis at 618-638-2444 by text or phone call to discuss possibilities.
