Exploring Community Safety: Metropolis City Council Explores Funding for the Flock Safety System

WMOK (Metropolis, IL) – At Monday Night’s Metropolis City Council meeting the purchase of the Flock Safety System was discussed.

The Flock Safety System is a system that the Metropolis Police Department is looking at implementing.  It offers a technology-driven approach to community safety.

The system utilizes automatic license plate recognition cameras and, in some instances, audio detection, together with objective evidence.

These cameras capture images of vehicles, recording license plates and vehicle characteristics, but are designed not to identify people.

The collected data can provide law enforcement with valuable leads and investigations, helping to identify suspect vehicles in crimes ranging from burglaries to violence.

While recognized by some for it’s ability to aid police, some express concerns regarding the implications of widespread surveillance.

Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse will join us on Wednesday May 28th for coffee break and we’ll learn much more about the local perspective the flock safety system among other items regarding Metropolis crime and safety and again that coffee break with.

Metropolis City Clean Up Week This Week

Metropolis City Clean Up Week Upcoming -

WMOK – Metropolis, IL – As spring blossoms in Metropolis, the city is excited to announce its much-anticipated Spring Clean Up Week, scheduled from May 12th to May 16th. This annual event encourages residents to participate in a collective effort to keep our community clean and beautiful.

During Clean Up Week, residents are invited to declutter their homes and neighborhoods by placing unwanted items curbside for disposal. However, it’s important to note that this service will be available for this week only. To ensure a smooth collection process, all items must be placed at your regular pick-up point and positioned within five feet of the trash container.

City officials emphasize that cleanliness is key, and therefore, all items placed for collection must be either bagged or contained. Additionally, any loose items need to be bundled for easy handling by workers. To facilitate timely collection, residents should have their trash ready for pick-up on their designated day, with all items out by 6 a.m.

While this is a fantastic opportunity to dispose of unwanted items, residents should be aware of some restrictions. The following items will not be accepted: tires, batteries, hazardous or medical waste, car parts, satellites, yard waste, construction and demolition debris, flammable liquids, paint (unless it’s empty or dry), electronics, and appliances. This ensures that we maintain a safe and environmentally-friendly disposal process.

Participants will convene in the library’s basement every Friday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM to work on their individual projects. This group aims to provide a welcoming space for crafters to focus on their hobbies while enjoying a friendly atmosphere.
