Special Weather Statement –

1147 AM CDT Thu May 8 2025 -
Cold Air Funnels Possible...

There have been a few reports of cold air funnels in southeast Missouri.

These cold air funnels are developing underneath scattered showers and thunderstorms
that are moving across the area.

Underneath these showers, spinning columns of air that look like tornadoes may continue to develop.

These funnels usually are very brief and rarely touch the ground. If these funnels do touch down,
they most likely will not cause damage to life or property.

Cold air funnels are due to very cool air aloft, warm moist air near the ground, and are usually
in association with a strong area of low pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere.

Due to little or no wind shear, they are usually weak and very brief.

Rotary Club of Metropolis: Supporting Youth and Community Through Engagement and Fundraising

WMOK (Metropolis, IL) – When Rotarian and Youth Exchange Officer Terry Foster joined us at WMOK to discuss the Rotary Club of Metropolis’ sponsorship of an exchange student from Brazil, we asked Foster to share with us a bit about the Rotary Club of Metropolis.

The Rotary meets on Thursdays at Noon at Community Christian Church.  Foster advised that the club is welcoming to new members.

The Rotary is currently planning the Superman Car Show which allows them to raise money through sponsorships and registrations to support the club’s missions.  They assist with scholarships and work on community projects.  Foster cited work with The Curtis House and Hope Unlimited.

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL  — The Metropolis Public Library is excited to invite crafty people to its community initiative, the Nifty Needles Group.  This weekly gathering invites residents aged 11 and up to explore their creativity through knitting, sewing, embroidery, and other personal crafting projects.

Participants will convene in the library’s basement every Friday from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM to work on their individual projects. This group aims to provide a welcoming space for crafters to focus on their hobbies while enjoying a friendly atmosphere.

“Crafting is a wonderful way to express creativity and connect with others,” said the library’s program coordinator, Colby Kennedy. “We want to create an inclusive environment where individuals can share their skills, learn from one another, and enjoy refreshments provided by the library.”

The Nifty Needles Group is perfect for both beginners learning a new skill and experienced crafters wanting to refine their techniques or tackle larger projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies and ideas to share.

In addition to hands-on crafting, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversation with fellow enthusiasts, fostering a sense of community around shared interests.

The Metropolis Public Library is committed to serving the needs of its diverse population, and this new group is just one of many initiatives aimed at bringing people together through their common interests.

For more information about the Nifty Needles Group, stop by the library or call 618-524-4312.
