Sister City Signing on Thursday at 2pm - Community Invited to Attend
(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Our city of Metropolis, known as “Superman’s hometown,” has a rich history of which most locals are aware – that extends beyond the fictional superhero.
On D-Day, June 6, 1944, paratrooper John Steele of Metropolis found himself entangled in the church steeple of Sainte-Mère-Eglise, Normandy.
As a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, Steele was part of the early morning airborne assault. He spent hours trapped in the steeple, observing the battle below. Eventually, he was taken prisoner by German forces but later escaped.
Steele’s bravery and unique perspective on the battle have made him a celebrated figure in D-Day history.
The Heroes of Massac Endeavors program has been tirelessly working to honor John Steele’s bravery and share his story with the community.
In Fall 2022, they successfully installed a sign at the entrance of Metropolis, marking the hometown of John Marvin Steele.
This week, project organizer Vicki Mayhall travels to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day and be present for the sister city signing agreement between Metropolis and Sainte-Mere-Eglise.
Meanwhile in Metropolis… Metropolis Mayor Don Canada will welcome the Mayor of Sainte-Mère-Eglise on Thursday for a historic sister city agreement signing, solidifying the bond between the two cities.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend the Sister City Signing Ceremony on Thursday at 2pm.
2PM – Metropolis City Hall, 106 W.5th St. – Sister City Signing Ceremony
