A Note from the WMOK Newsroom

Good MORNING and Happy Friday to you!!

We have really been focusing on adjustments with our time management and workflow at WMOK as we continue our over 70 year tradition of providing Metropolis and Massac County News.

We realized in the wee hours of this morning that we mistakenly published the incorrect draft of the Thursday WMOK News Check Yellow Sheet.  We apologize and invite you to visit our news page  and scroll down to see Thursday’s “Yellow Sheet”.  ((It will open in a “new window”)) –> https://www.920wmok.com/wmoknews/

The error occurred during our work in transitioning the designing of the WMOK Yellow Sheet, which we hope you enjoy.

We continue to bring the new look to life and we’re most interested in what you want to find in your “Yellow Sheet” each day.  We invited your feedback and thoughts – text us at 618-524-9209.

Today Is...

National Christmas Lights Day

Time to deck the halls, folks, because December 1 is National Christmas Lights Day! Before the invention of electric lights, families would balance candles on the branches of their Christmas trees—a risky practice that naturally led to several house fires. Electric Christmas lights were first invented in 1880 by Thomas Edison, who promptly strung them all over the outside of his Menlo Park laboratory. Because people were initially distrustful of electricity, however, it took another several decades for the invention to catch on. And it wasn’t until 1903, when General Electric began selling pre-assembled kits of Christmas lights, that electric lights became popular with people of all classes. Today, electric lights are an integral part of the winter holiday season, and certainly aren’t exclusive to Christmas. As we get ready for the end of the year, let’s string up our lights and celebrate. ‘Tis the season, after all.

Moving toward Christmas – Please text us at 618-524-9209 ((you can also “reply” to your “Yellow Sheet Text” – just jot us a little note or a big one and recap for us what you have learned and what you still have questions about.

One of the items we mentioned when we last met was “finding and following fun things on Facebook” –

When you’re on Facebook later search for “American Memory Lane” – on your smartphone touch the “magnifying glass” in the upper right hand of the screen and in the blank that appears type in American Memory Lane.  If you enjoy the page you will see a “like” or “follow” button.  Touching that button will cause the page and it’s posts to show up in your “Facebook Feed”.

Experiment with it and let us know how it goes!

Other pages we enjoy that following that you can investigate:

Mental Floss – Home for all things curious, including surprising facts; answers to life’s big questions; and untold –  Repeat the steps above at Facebook and search for Mental Floss.  If you enjoy it and would like to see it show up in your Facebook feed click “like” or “follow”
