(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – WMOK spoke with Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse regarding a chase that took place throughout parts of Metropolis on Monday morning with speeds reported via scanner traffic as high as 60mph.
The subject fled through Metropolis at excessive rates of speed – 12th street, 8th street, 6th street – the scanner traffic advising of location was so rapid that we could not have possibly updated it on Faceb00k here in the WMOK newsroom. We quickly went to live updates on air and advised motorists in Metropolis to pull off of the street and park until the danger had ended.

The Massac County Farm Bureau Farmers Market Has Ended for the 2023 Season
... But you can still find our farmers locally until their season ends
(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – The Massac County Farm Bureau officially ended the weekly Farmers Market at Dorothy Miller Park in late September – however local farmers will continue to make their produce available to the community until their growing season ends.
A popular spot for Massac County farmers to make their good available to the community is what many know as the “former Clark School lot” on East 5th Street.
Mr. Verbarg has told WMOK that he will set up on that lot throughout the end of his growing season. He currently has apples as well as other produce and recently told WMOK that he will soon have turnips.
All Massac County farmers are invited to let us know at WMOK what produce you have available and when/where your goods will be available.

LIHEAP Program Available to Assist Southernmost Illinois Residents with Heating Expenses
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible low-income households pay for home energy services (primarily heating during winter months).
Energy costs can place severe and continuing stress on a family’s budget. In some instances, households are forced to make painful decisions regarding which bills to pay and which necessities to survive without.
Illinois residents with a household income that does not exceed an amount determined annually by the Department of Commerce are eligible.
Annual eligibility levels are determined based on available funding and may not exceed 200% of the federal nonfarm poverty level.

Hate crimes jumped 7% in 2022 from year before, FBI data show
(NewsNation) — Reports of hate crimes in the United States jumped nearly 7% in 2022 from the previous year, according to new data from the FBI.
The agency’s annual Hate Crime Statistics report shows the uptick was particularly acute for Jewish Americans, who were the victim of 1,124 hate crimes in 2022, the most recorded since 1995 and an increase of 36.4% from 2021.
Black Americans remained the most targeted group in 2022, with 3,424 incidents recorded, a jump of 3.8% from the prior year. Hate crimes against LGBTQ people were also up 13.8% in 2022.
Man faces misdemeanor for twice bringing guns to Wisconsin state Capitol, asking to see governor
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A man who brought a loaded handgun into the Wisconsin Capitol, demanding to see Gov. Tony Evers, and returned hours later with an assault rifle after posting bail has been charged with a misdemeanor.
Joshua Pleasnick, 43, was charged Monday with carrying a firearm in a public building. The Madison man is scheduled for an initial court appearance on the charge Thursday in Dane County Circuit Court. Online court records do not list an attorney who could speak on Pleasnick’s behalf.
A message asking whether Pleasnick has been assigned a public defender was left Tuesday with the State Public Defender’s Office by The Associated Press. Messages were also left by the AP for two attorneys listed in a previous divorce case involving Pleasnick.

Most Boomers Missed This Retirement Strategy But Millennials Still Have Time
Fidelity Investments recently released its annual estimate of healthcare costs in retirement. The scary numbers indicate the average person older than 65 years old may spend $157,500 in out-of-pocket expenses for healthcare in retirement. A couple may pay an average of $315,000.
Middle-aged Millennials should take note, this is not just a Baby Boomer problem. Imagine what those costs might be in a few short decades from now.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services estimate
that out-of-pocket healthcare expenses may grow at a projected 4.1% between 2025 and 2031. CMS also suggests a low growth rate of 3.6% due to changes in Medicare Part D enabling the negotiation of lower drug prices. While there are many countervailing variables between now and Millennial retirement years, what might the out-of-pocket healthcare costs be for the first wave of retiring Millennials?
Assume the oldest Millennials retire at 65 years old — 23 years from now — in 2046. What if health expenses in retirement continue to grow from today’s out-of-pocket estimates at the rate CMS projects (between 4.1% and 3.6%)? Let’s say it’s 3.8% annually. Could Millennial couples be looking at average healthcare costs in retirement of approximately $742,000, while solo-living Millennials expect to pay more than $371,000 for healthcare in their retired years?

These five toys are regular finalists for Hall of Fame honors. Now fans can vote one in
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — They are playfully called the “forgotten five”: A handful of toys — the pogo stick, the Fisher-Price Corn Popper, My Little Pony, PEZ dispensers, and Transformers — that regularly approach toybox royalty as finalists for the National Toy Hall of Fame, only to be tossed back on the pile.
For one of them, this is the year they finally make it in. The Hall of Fame is letting fans decide which one.
Toys usually are chosen for the annual induction ceremony with input from a panel of historians, educators and other experts. The members vote for their top three out of a dozen finalists that have been selected by an internal committee from among thousands of nominations that come in each year.

Max Baer Jr. once saved Buddy Ebsen's life on the set of ''The Beverly Hillbillies''
Most of us don’t consider our day jobs a matter of life and death, but one fateful day during the filming of The Beverly Hillbillies, it was.
In his autobiography, The Other Side of Oz, actor Buddy Ebsen recounted a harrowing experience he had during production for the hit television series. He wrote, “In the show, during Jethro’s ‘Double-Naught Spy’ phase, he inventively installed helicopter blades on the old Hillbilly truck, and with blind faith in the feasibility of his conversion, he and I prepared for takeoff in our first test flight.” Viewers may recall that in “Double Naught Jethro”, Jethro, after seeing a spy film, decides to reinvent himself as a secret agent and attempts to convert the family car into one fit for espionage.

Teens Spend Average of 4.8 Hours on Social Media Per Day
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Just over half of U.S. teenagers (51%) report spending at least four hours per day using a variety of social media apps such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), a Gallup survey of more than 1,500 adolescents finds. This use amounts to 4.8 hours per day for the average U.S. teen across seven social media platforms tested in the survey.
Across age groups, the average time spent on social media ranges from as low as 4.1 hours per day for 13-year-olds to as high as 5.8 hours per day for 17-year-olds. Girls spend nearly an hour more on social media than boys (5.3 vs. 4.4 hours, respectively).

These data are from the Familial and Adolescent Health Survey conducted by Gallup June 26-July 17, 2023, using the Gallup Panel. The survey collected data from 6,643 parents and 1,591 adolescents who were the children of those parents. The survey asked about parental and child wellbeing, parenting practices, youth mental health, youth activities, quality of parent-child relationships, and other topics. The data were collected amid growing concerns from academic scholars that social media use is habit-forming, leads to overconsumption and may contribute to mental health problems. A recent report published by Gallup and the Institute for Family Studies contributes to this discussion.
