Franklin Elementary School in Massac County Named National Blue Ribbon School by the Department of Education

/ WMOK

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – On Tuesday the U.S. Department of Education recognized 353 schools across the United States  as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2023 – among them, Franklin Elementary School in Massac County.

WMOK spoke with Massac Unit #1 School Superintendent Jason Hayes following the announcement and told us a bit about the history of the program which began under the Secretary of Education in the Reagan administration in the early 80s.

Hayes told WMOK that Franklin Elementary is the only school in “Southernmost Illinois” to ever receive the honor.

Last year 17 schools in Illinois were selected last year and none of them were in Southern Illinois.  New Simpson Hill, GIant City, a Carbondale school – outside of that Hayes said the honorees are mostly in the Chicago area and it’s suburbs.

The Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools program is a prestigious recognition awarded to exemplary public and private schools in the United States. Established in 1982, this program aims to honor schools that demonstrate high academic achievement or significant improvement in student performance. Each year, a select number of schools are chosen as Blue Ribbon Schools based on rigorous criteria and a comprehensive application process.

Blue Ribbon Schools represent educational excellence and serve as models for other institutions across the nation. These schools exhibit a commitment to providing quality education, fostering a positive learning environment, and ensuring the success of all students. They employ innovative teaching methods, engage in effective school leadership, and maintain strong partnerships with families and communities.

Being recognized as a Blue Ribbon School signifies the dedication and hard work of administrators, teachers, students, and parents. It also serves as a source of pride for the entire school community. The Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Schools program continues to inspire and celebrate educational excellence, encouraging schools nationwide to strive for continuous improvement in their pursuit of academic success.
