Former Huddle House Building Shows Progress in Opening as Lucky Dogs

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – A big topic around Metropolis and Massac County in recent months has been the closure of Huddle House and speculation on what business would move into the space going forward.

A “Lucky Dogs” sign arrived on the building this week.

WMOK spoke with Evan Long on Thursday morning about the opening.  He advised that there is not yet a “hard opening date”.  Long told WMOK they are still in the remodeling phase and there is still work to be done.  He hopes that the remodeling phase will be completed by late Summer.  Long expects that the business will create about six new jobs in the community.

Lucky Dog’s will be classified as a restaurant and will have a bar.  Long told WMOK that their menu will include hot dogs but will offer other items as well.  Long continues to finalize plans and details for the opening later this year.

Metropolis Mayor Don Canada Addresses Comments on Social Media that the City of Metropolis Makes Revenue from Superman Celebration

When Metropolis Mayor Don Canada joined WMOK for Coffee Break he addressed comments on social media that the city of Metropolis makes revenue off of the Superman celebration.

Mayor Canada advised that while all of the feedback he received during the Superman celebration was positive – there were some folks who complained and made unfounded accusations on social media.

Some folks on social media suggested that the city of Metropolis makes a great deal of revenue off of the Superman celebration – allowing the city to “pad their pockets”.

Mayor Canada confirmed to WMOK that not only does the city of Metropolis not make any direct revenue off of the Superman celebration – the city of metropolis donates utility resources and manpower to assist with the Superman Celebration.

Of Parking accomodations for the Superman Celebration, Mayor Canada said, “We opened up the former Save-A-Lot parking lot – that was a hundred spots, we’ve got 40 spots over at the new parking lot, we have 20 left spots between Hardee’s that belong to the city and  10 more down on 7th street where we moved the public bathrooms.”

We asked Mayor Canada to directly address the rumors and commentary that the city makes revenue off of the Superman Celebration – Mayor Canada advised that the city makes “zero” off of the Superman Celebration.  He went on to explain that the city utility companies are the ones who set up for the power and water, the street department does work in setting up picnic tables and blocking off streets.  Canada also pointed out that water and electricity is provided by the city for the event and multiple officers are on duty and posted at the Superman Celebration while the regular shifts are on duty in order to keep those services running around town.
