(WMOK – Metropolis, IL) Massac County Unit #1 School Superintendent Jason Hayes confirmed to WMOK this week on Coffee Break that an incident between staff members at Massac High School on Friday January 13th has resulted in professional leave for one staff member.
Of the incident that took place on Friday January 13th at Massac County High School in which one teacher slashed the tires of another teacher Hayes said that the staff member has been placed on professional leave and may not work or be on school property until the investigation has been completed. By the next board meeting Hayes expects that the situation will have reached its resolution.
Hayes said while they’ve had staff to staff conflicts in the past, those are usually resolved somewhat easily. Hayes said that in his tenure with Massac Unit #1 that this is the first incident of this nature that has risen to this level and it did catch both he and the building principal off guard.
Superintendent Hayes said he had been thinking following the incident about how bizarre it seemed but learned at the Illinois Association of School Administrators meeting just this week that issues such as this have become more common. The speaker at the meeting discussed Post Pandemic Issues and said that she had “walked out three teachers” in recent weeks.
Hayes said that the topic of Post Pandemic Issues has been something that they have addressed with students but they had not actively addressed it with staff and he feels that there is a need.
Hayes said that regardless of the more deeply rooted problems that may have led up to the incident that the unit will not tolerate this sort of behavior. The incident took place on a Friday, school was out on Monday and the teacher was put on leave before school began on Tuesday morning.
