If the Tasmanian Tiger Becomes De-Extinct, Could the Dodo Bird Be Next?
(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – In yesterday’s “Yellow Sheet” we shared with you that Scientists Collect First RNA From an Extinct Tasmanian Tiger.
If you “didn’t read the article” :
“Scientists have extracted RNA from a roughly 130-year-old specimen preserved in a museum: a Tasmanian tiger, also known as a thylacine. The feat marks the first time any RNA has been obtained from an extinct species, according to a new study published Tuesday in the journal Genome Research.”
As we revisited this section today our minds were on extinct creatures.
We’re aware of the Dodo Bird – which we first learned about from Looney Tunes.
Yoyo Dodo, also known as The Dodo Bird, is a wacky bird who first appeared in the 1938 Looney Tunes short “Porky in Wackyland”. Yoyo is a green male dodo with red shoes, and a red umbrella sticking out from the top of his head, although some of his appearances have him in black-and-white. Looney Tunes Fandom
The dodo is an extinct flightless bird (since around 1690) that was endemic to the island of Mauritius, which is east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The dodo’s closest genetic relative was the also-extinct Rodrigues solitaire.

Radio Times turns 100 – look back on the first ever issue
The BBC was only months old when in January 1923, John Reith, the BBC’s first director-general, received an ultimatum from the Newspaper Publishers’ Association warning him that if the corporation didn’t pay a hefty fee, none of the NPA’s publications would carry radio listings.
The embargo was short-lived, but long enough to give Reith the idea of publishing a dedicated listings magazine. The first edition of The Radio Times, “the official organ of the BBC”, duly appeared on newsstands on 28th September 1923.

It was a tough day on the links but the Massac County boys golf team pushed through and earned a 3rd place finish at the Anna-Jonesboro Regional. This qualifies the team to compete in the Mt. Carmel Sectional next Monday 10/2/23
Lady Patriots golf will start their postseason trek today as they tee it up in the West Frankfort 1A Girls Golf Regional at Franklin County Country Club. Our girls will begin play with times starting at 9:00am.
MCHS Boys Soccer is back in action at home again today in the final SIRR conference game of the season against A-J, come out and cheer these guys on as the regular season starts to wind down.
A battle for the top of the SIRR Conference will go down tonight at MCHS as the Lady Patriots Volleyball team takes on the Murphysboro Red Devils. The Frosh match will get things started at 5:00pm.

(WMOK) Pope County, IL – Sophomores at Pope County High School are looking for animals for their Halloween themed event on Saturday, October 21.
The organizers hope to have on hand any animals that those attending the event can pet and learn about – sheeps, goats, pigs, snakes – you name it.
